.....in Lake George.....the hotel chain is still open.....

America’s last Howard Johnson’s restaurant has closed

....The last surviving Howard Johnson’s restaurant has closed.

Open for most of the past 70 years, the restaurant was located in Lake George, New York, a popular summer vacation spot near the Adirondack Mountains. The restaurant closed its doors in recent weeks and the property is up for lease, according to a local affiliate.

“Lake George is officially dead,” a Howard Johnson’s fan wrote on Facebook, adding several pictures of the abandoned restaurant. “Cobwebs on the door. Right before Memorial Day rush up here.”

The longtime roadside staple had about 1,000 restaurants in the 1960s and 1970s, and it was once America’s largest restaurant chain. Instantly recognizable for its orange roofs, the diners served 28 types of ice cream and became a part of American culture. “Mad Men” recreated the restaurant to film a scene.

But Howard Johnson quickly found itself in the shadow of McDonald’s (MCD) and other fast-food chains that maximized efficiency and better managed supply chains. Marriott (MAR) bought a crippled Howard Johnson in 1985, selling hundreds of the brand’s hotels and about 200 restaurants to Prime Motor Inn. That company sold the restaurants to other chains, and they lost the “HoJo” name.

By last decade just a handful of Howard Johnson restaurants were still operating: the Lake George location, along with one in Lake Placid, New York, and another in Bangor, Maine. The Lake Placid restaurant closed in 2015, and the Bangor location shut its doors in 2016.

The Lake George location has “seen interest” since it went up for lease late last year, reports News 10. The real estate listing for the 7,500-square foot property states a price of $10.

Although the Howard Johnson restaurants are closed, the hotel chain is still alive and well. There are about 300 locations and it’s currently owned by hotel giant Wyndham (WH).

this Johnson......is no more........?!

That's a little sad. My family moved to Florida when I was 7 and I wondered wtf all of the orange things were, and my dad told me "Howard Johnsons", which meant nothing to me. We never ate at one either, but they were quite the familiar sight.

I remember in the distant past when they had the only restaurant contract for the entire Pennsylvania Turnpike rest area service. Sit-down service on the Turnpike was a very 1950s thing, but totally out of step by the 1970s.

There used to be one close by my job in the early 1980's. We used to go Fridays for the all-you-can-eat fried clam strips and fried fish.

I don't remember if it was good, but never came away hungry...

HoJo's was not quite a staple of my childhood, but it is very fondly remembered by yours truly.

RIP, old friend.

I remember, in high school with my group of friends, going to a Howard Johnson's for all you can eat fish fry. The goal was to eat all the fish from a platter before the waitress could swing around the room and head back to the kitchen. Great memories!

I have fond memories of HoJo's. I never had a bad meal at one and, some of their items couldn't be found in other restaurants (the clam strips were always good). There there was the "hat tip" in "Blazing Saddles"; Howard Johnson's ~ ONE flavor. I can't remember the last time I ate in a HoJo's so, I guess their end was to be expected. old fogey smiley

There were still HoJo hotels operating in the two Florida towns I lived in in the 90's, but I think they were both demolished in the last decade or so (Fort Walton Beach and Panama City). I know the PC one is gone, last time I was there it had been bulldozed down to the slabs.

Oh yes... yes, indeed. I seem to remember their dessert menu being very kid-friendly, too.

Now that I think about it... my mom may have waitressed at a HoJo's when I was just but a wee, wee lad.

I have no specific memory of a HoJo's, but, with the cross-country road trips and moves we did when I was a kid, I'm certain I have been in one.
Sad decline...

This is the HoJo's we visited most frequently during my childhood. At one point, we lived less than a mile from here:

I've never seen one. Always assumed John Mellencougar made up the name.
