I checked my user manual and didn't see which bluetooth version it is. I think there is at least one newer version of this model.

I have the prior(?) soundcore and it’s a great little speaker. Was using in the yard this weekend.

If possible, you're better off moving up the Soundcore line at least a notch or two. While this one works, it's a bit tinny, and too directional for most uses. We use the Soundcore 2 for sharing sound from the iPad in the old Sienna van while on the road, and for picnics, usually at, or near the beach. It replaced the original Soundcore noted in the thread here, which we gifted to a friend, after it really didn't cut it for either of those applications.

We scored a Vanzon X5 Pro for <$25 during a pre-pandemic lightning deal, and it even kicks the the pricier Soundcore 2's butt..... which is to say, that if you keep your eyes peeled, you ought to be able to score some decent BT speakers for reasonable coin. I don't want to deprive Anker/Soundcore of any sales, but this isn't their best effort. I wouldn't recommend a buy at anything over $19.

If expectations are managed, the Anker/SoundCore line is— ok.

I'm no audiophile nor an audio snob, but having a SoundCore 2 and a pair of Anker Headphones, I'm disappointed in the 'Anker' sound.

Doing a lot of casual listening to music, I don't expect Uber-high performance from portable speakers.

But these two Anker products have excessive mid-bass that results in a muddy sound, at least to my ears.

While the treble is pretty good, it can't make up for muddy bass.

Not having heard the original SoundCore speaker linked in the OP, I don't know if the 'tinny' sound mentioned is more realistic than the enhanced bass of the 2.

Otherwise, this speaker may be just the thing for one's casual listening, and AMZ does have a good return policy.

they have a "bit" of compression.
but for me, a good "horrid" listening reference for how many people listen these days.
Quite revealing in the pop idiom of lousy mixes.
