There is a mirror on each side of the vehicle which is sufficient.

Looks more like a crossover than an SUV.


The article states the rear window has a wiper.

Previous years show large but steeply angled rear window, so that may still be the case for the 2023.

I vote for a back up camera that feeds the rearview mirror while in motion, then reverts to back up duty when car is in Reverse.

Isn't there at least one vehicle that has cameras feeding the left and right mirrors?

I've been car researching lately and the ones I've been dinging aren't the ones with a small back window so much as small back side windows - either poor design or whatnot. A back up camera I can live with but nobody's providing side cameras yet.

Wow, might even be worse than the rear view from my Prius.

In the US side cameras aren't legal. Mirrors are REQUIRED to be included with the vehicle at the time of sale. The end user can remove one, the other, or both depending on state laws.

It's curious that any state would allow both side mirrors to be removed.

A CA registered vehicle must have two mirrors, one being a left side mirror.

The other can be either a rearview (inside) mirror.

If view out the rear window is obstructed, then a right side mirror is also required.

There are specific exceptions where two side mirrors are required.

There is an additional exception or two, but for most of the motoring public, the above applies.

So, an CA owner could take delivery of a car, which would have three mirrors, and then remove the right side mirror for whatever reason.

Only when the view to the rear was obscured would he be in violation.

But no side mirrors?

That would be unique, here.

That would be true in CA.

Maybe I saw an aftermarket kit that supplemented side mirrors.

As long as the internal and right side mirrors had an unobstructed view, a camera might legally replace the mirror.

It's a fine point, but I'm guessing side cameras aren't illegal, but it's having less than the legally required number of mirrors, at least in CA.

Side and front cameras were originally intended to assist with slow speed navigation, whether parking or squeezing through a tight area.

The requirements for side mirrors didn't contemplate technology advances. Just like adaptive lighting, which was adopted outside the US and is slowly becoming acceptable. The move to cameras replacing side mirrors will eventually happen. the cameras can be arranged to provide a far better view of one's surroundings and eliminate blindspots. Add in the fact that the cameras can be positioned in such a way to minimize aerodynamic impact and it could help with fuel efficiency (or EV range improvements).

They don't stick out as far so far less likely to get torn off or damaged.

“So what”??? The cost of replacing it is what.
If your rearview mirror gets broken in an accident it would cost less to replace, but likely your whole car would have been totaled anyway.

A broken left or right side mirror can set you back $1k. You can ask my wife who now backs out of the garage much more slowly than in the past.
