Patching horse hair plaster walls

Besides the particular problem, general condition and quality of the original plaster work makes a difference. For example I have done repairs on the horse hair plaster in my father's house years ago. Most was still tightly bonded to the wood lath with most keys not broken. Not too difficult to patch and repair.

In comparison, any repairs I would do on the horse hair plaster in my current house may be just to knock it down the the lath and put up wallboard. The original plaster was mixed with too much hair and sand, it crumbles easily. In addition they skimped on the final skim coat of white plaster, so the surface breaks down easily.

Repairs can take everything from plaster screws to secure loose plaster in areas where the keying has broken off behind the lath, bridging broken areas of lath with wood or wallboard, and so on.

Had it in my bathroom. Tore it down and put drywall up.

A lot of people cover up problems like this with 1/4” drywall, rather than tear out and replace or repair.
