Is "Yellowstone" any good?
Posted by: freeradical
Date: June 10, 2022 01:00PM
I've watched the first five episodes of season one now, and not much of anything seems to have happened. It feels like I've watched five pilot episodes or something.

Does it get better? Is there going to be any sort of story fleshed out, or is this one of those shows that's all production and not much else?

Yes, spin offs were 1883, which was so well received, they are going to expand its one season into another angle in the same time period. The 6666 ranch in TX is another and there will be 1932 I think. So 3 spin-off.

The writer, Taylor Sheridan also stars as a supporting character in the current day Yellowstone show. He is the head cowboy of the rodeo competition group. Can't recall if they are in season 1 or not.

I gave up after half of season one. I know we all have imperfections but I hate shows where the characters have no redeeming qualities. I left after X killed his Y's Z. (trying to be polite and not spoil). I mean, seriously?

It's a lot like a modern day Western soap opera.

It reminds me of the execrable “Dallas” from the Seventies/Eighties. Equally worthless.

I guess I’m in the minority here, but I actually like the show quite a bit.

gave up after 5 eps and 1883 after 2.
lotta weak "acting" and "writing".

the only saving grace of "Yellowstone" was the woman what plays the sister, Kelly Reilly. A Brit stage actress. She's been in a number of shows, though a couple things aren't worth trying to us.
Brittania, Black Box.

Though we've had enough of cop shows, might try her season of True Detective (2) and Above Suspicion.

I'm a fan...

I call it "Dallas meets Montana" even tho they film a lot of it in Utah. Gorgeous country regardless.

But I really watch it for the high priced show horses that show up occasionally. Them fancy pants ones that spin... The prices they mention on the show aren't that far off.

And to see what Beth Dutton will do next. I have a soft spot for Lloyd.

Just watched another Taylor Sheridan movie - Wind River. Kinda dark in the same way Yellowstone is. Some of the same actors.

And LOVED the way they took revenge on the Beck brothers...

The leader of the show horse group, Travis? Is actually the writer Taylor Sheridan. He really is a "cowboy"

Will look into Wind River.

I hate shows where the characters have no redeeming qualities.

Exactly!

I seldom bail on a movie, but if there's nobody to like, I'm out.

After three episodes of Yellowstone, I was done.

It's a lot like a modern day Western soap opera.

I was saying that early on.

Another principle reason I bailed.

I call it "Dallas meets Montana"

Yep.

I really liked 1883.

It was everything (mostly) I like in a western, and nothing like Yellowstone.

Just watched another Taylor Sheridan movie - Wind River.

Geeeze, I liked that movie.

Lots of values I like to see in a movie, especially a western, this one — of sorts.

Saw it on a lark, having no idea what to expect, except that I was interested in one of the leads and thought — what the heck.

Glad I did.

Check out the rest of Taylor Sheridan’s screenplays - I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. All of them are on the own list now.

I'm not sure what that is, but did a little Ducking and saw he did Hell and High Water, which I really liked.

Those Who Wish Me Dead looks worthwhile too.

Thank you for the recommendations!

Also a fan, but by waiting, and bingeing, the setup episodes that seem to drag on, aren't as bothersome w/ the instant gratification provided by the next episode. We had Dish when Breaking Bad was on, and w/ an external USB HDD, we DVR'ed the entire series before bingeing. BTW, BB had a lot more setup episodes than the 'stone.

thumbs up thumbs up for Kelly/Beth if more inspiration/perspiration is needed.

Spin offs are also good, so paying attention to details (Yogi) bears fruit.

We watched about 3 episodes and couldn't get into it. Maybe it's because we live on a real full-time farm and was critiqued the show too much.

I watched Sicario last night, which Sheridan wrote and someone else directed. That was pretty good.

My husband enjoys it, but I can tell from what I hear in the next room that I would hate it. It just sounds like wall to wall violence.
