Justin Bieber shares he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome

Earlier this week, the singer announced he had to postpone three shows due to an illness.

....Justin Bieber on Friday shared the reason he is taking a break from performing, telling his Instagram followers that he has been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

The syndrome "occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears," according to the Mayo Clinic. "In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear."

Shingles, and by extension Ramsay Hunt, are caused by the virus that causes chickenpox. Those who get the syndrome had chickenpox when they were younger.

In his video, Bieber described it as a "virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis."

"As you can see, this eye is not blinking," he said in the video, pointing to his face. "I can't smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move. So there's full paralysis on this side of my face."

A spokesperson for the singer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this week, Bieber, 28, announced he would be postponing a few shows due to an ongoing health issue.

What's missing here?

Bieber was born in 1994 in a major hospital in London, Ontario, Canada (not an isolated, backwoods location.)*

The vaccine for Chickenpox was developed in the 70s, and widely used by the 80s, and Canada strongly advised vaccination for children between 4 and 6 years old (before they enter school).

How did he come down with Chickenpox in the first place?

Chickenpox vaccine wasn't recommended as part of the standard vaccination schedule in Canada until 1998. The first vaccination campaign in Canada took place in 2000. He was born in 1994. He could easily have had chickenpox prior to that, or could be one of the 5% or so who for whom the vaccine is not fully effective, or just missed it because of spotty vaccination in the first years after the vaccine became available.

Shingrix can prevent this, but it's recommended for people over the age of 50. Unless he was aware of a unique risk, there's no special reason for him to have had the shot as an adult.

Overall between 30% and 70% of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome type 2 patients recover most functionality depending on early diagnosis and treatment with chances of recovery dropping to 50% if treatment is delayed beyond 72 hours.

Once the active infection has been cleared with antivirals, the facial nerves will begin to regrow at approximately 1mm per day. The recovery process for Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is significantly longer than Bell's Palsy. On average, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome patients begin to see their symptoms resolve between 5 and 12 months post diagnosis and can expect to see continued resolution of symptoms for up to 2 years post diagnosis.
