Ford issues stop-sale of electric Mustang Mach-E crossovers due to potential safety defect[

Ford is instructing dealers to temporarily stop selling electric Mustang Mach-E crossovers due to a potential safety defect that could cause the vehicles to become immobile.

The issue can lead to a malfunction that could cause the vehicle not to start or immediately lose propulsion power while in motion, a dealer notice states.

The problem is notable, as automakers continue to have problems launching new electric vehicles. Ford, in recent years, also has experienced problematic vehicle launches.

.... Ford Motor is instructing dealers to temporarily stop selling electric Mustang Mach-E crossovers due to a potential safety defect that could cause the vehicles to become immobile.

Ford, in a notice Monday to its dealers, said potentially affected vehicles include 2021 and 2022 Mach-Es that were built from May 27, 2020, through May 24, 2022, at the automaker’s Cuautitlan plant in Mexico. That’s essentially since the automaker started producing the electric vehicle. It’s unclear whether all of the nearly 100,000 vehicles produced during that time will need to be recalled.

The problem involves a potential overheating of the vehicle’s high voltage battery main contactors, which is an electrically controlled switch for a power circuit. The issue can lead to a malfunction that could cause the vehicle not to start or immediately lose propulsion power while in motion, the notice states.

The recall is notable, as automakers continue to have problems launching new electric vehicles. Ford, in recent years, also has experienced problematic vehicle launches, leading to high recall and warranty costs.

Ford has issued a handful of recalls regarding the Mach-E since its launch, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. They’ve ranged from a software error causing unintended acceleration in less than 500 vehicles earlier this year to problems with loose subframe bolts and inadequate bonding for thousands of the vehicle’s glass panel roofs.

Ford expects to have a solution for the problem in the third quarter, according to the bulletin. Mustang Mach-E owners will be notified via mail after repair instructions and parts ordering information have been provided to dealers.....

stop.......sales........?!

.....Ford recalling now....

Ford recalls 49,000 U.S. Mach-E EVs over potential power loss

Ford said it will address the issue with a software update.

....Ford Motor Co said Tuesday it is recalling about 49,000 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles in the United States because a part could overheat and result in a loss of propulsion power.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker said DC fast charging and repeated wide-open pedal events can cause the high-voltage battery main contactors to overheat. Ford said it will address the issue that covers Mach-E vehicles built from late May 2020 through late May 2022 with a software update it expects to begin next month.

Dealers cannot deliver new vehicles to customers until the vehicles have the software update.

Ford said “overheating may lead to arcing and deformation of the electrical contact surfaces, which can result in a contactor that remains open or a contactor that welds closed.” If an overheated contactor opens while driving, it could result in a loss of propulsion power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford previously issued five recalls for various 2021 Mustang Mach-E vehicles, including calling back nearly 500 for a software issue that could cause unintended acceleration. Those recalls included loose bolts and inadequate windshield and panoramic roof glass bonding.....

Ford is actually......recalling them.............?!

So they’ll install a $2 CPU cooling fan to blow on the circuit.

I thought it would be due to false advertising and the fact that Mustangs are not station wagons!

They had a problem with a software glitch related to regen braking bricking the vehicle. Mach-e drivers, in I think Norway, noticed that when descending to a waterfront park the batteries would overheat and a software bug would shutdown the vehicle thinking that a thermal overtolerance condition was reached. This apparently happened to multiple vehicles in quick succession before Ford fixed the bug. They had to be towed to a nearby Ford dealer to be diagnosed and reset.

I would suspect that an over-heated battery might be an actual thermal over tolerance condition.

The bug would be allowing the batteries to become overheated.

Or that the batteries weren't overheated but the SCRAM software 'thought' they were and reacted to a non-event.

More likely:

We're gonna need a bigger switch.

Teslas, and most other EVs, disable regen if it's too cold, or the battery is fully charged.
