the heavy leather gloves I wear for yard work saved my finger

I was trimming the hedges with an electric trimmer and I got a little careless. Actually, a lot careless. I was one-handing it for more reach and when I went to use my other hand for more support I missed the handle and put my hand on the moving blade. It pinched my index finger pretty hard but didn't break the skin thanks to the gloves. Without the gloves, it wouldn't have cut my finger off but it would have been a really deep cut. My finger is still sore from the pinch.

Apparently, the universe had it in for my fingers because later I was moving a box and it slipped and sliced my pinky open (glorified paper cardboard cut). Between the two mishaps, I will definitely take the pinky paper/cardboard cut over the hedge trimmer.

Generally a REALLY good idea to use proper safety equipment. Glad you weren't seriously hurt.

That would "not" have been a good outcome!

Your wife was not available to do the work?

The EGO hedge trimmer has two trigger points on the handle to start and run. When one hand is off either trigger, the hedge trimmer immediately engages the brake.

Hey, I did all the hedge trimming at our old house and about 90% of the outdoor upkeep and maintenance.
I once cut the power cord straight in two, while hedge trimming. It had fallen down in the hedge, just enough that I didn’t see it, till I cut it. RollingEyesSmiley5
I got a new end for each section and then had two shorter cords. Lol

Wow-lucky you were wearing them and they stopped the blade. I was just getting ready to get out of the heavy leather glove business for yard work and just use mechanic gloves as my heavy gloves are wearing out. But, maybe I'll reconsider when I'm using equipment.

Sounds like it's time to fix up AllGold w/ rgG.... cool smiley

Then again, I "Osterized" my finger when I was kid, when no blender push tool, or heavy leather gloves were handy.

Heck, even Gordon Ramsay did it on TV.... yum smiley

You might want to stay in the house for a couple of days until it's safe to come out again.

ABSOLUTELY!

My dad had a pair of leather chucka boots he wore around the house. He had the toe boxes repaired at least 3 times from running over the tips of his boots with the lawn mower. Electric mower with the extension cord patched in about 5 places from running it over. Great dad. Scary around power tools, but completely rock solid safe around firearms. REALLY odd dichotomy.

The extension cord is in the big garage hanging on a pair of nails, retired, but never forgotten.

My Ryobi does too. Used to have a corded hedge trimmer... until I accidentally cut the cord.

Glad you made it out able to count to 10.

Two of my colleagues, both highly experienced mechanical engineers, accidentally lost the ability to truly flip someone off... they can now only say "Up 3/4 of you !". Both with snow blower accidents. When the second stage impeller is clogged, the impeller builds up some spring factor torque. Even when the engine is off and the spark plug removed. Relieving that gives enough power to snip off a finger tip.
