Kids put dad's favorite saying on his headstone

Steven Owens never meant harm by it, but his children said it was him. So they had it placed on his headstone for those that look for it at the Powers-Warren Cemetery in Runnells, Iowa.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I Googled a few stories. The cemetery wants it removed for indecency and doesn’t care that the message isn’t directed at the community.

Small-minded people are gonna kill us all.

Love that!
I've given some thought to what I want on mine as well.

Yeah, here I am thinking I need to transpose the first letter to the last, flip the whole thing upside down, read it backward to forward, change the letters to numbers and then back again, reanimate the codebreakers. Sheesh!

Low class.

Just because you died is no reason to change. Nice looking headstone though, compared to the commode I’ve selected for my headstone.

I’d have to think on this.

If I went with it at all, I’d have it in a much smaller, more discreet fashion. Something where you’d have to be right on top of it to read it.

It’s a public space, one that’s going to be visited by people in all sorts of emotional states; some of them in very dark, unfathomably sad places. Some would possibly find their mood leavened just a bit.

For others, an uninvited injection of crude humor might not be what the doctor ordered. Because of this, I’d want my final bit of snark shared in a way that would minimize even accidental intrusion upon others. Everything unto its time and place. ‘Hey it’s just a joke’ is not always the most appropriate take.

Is that headstone wood? I've never seen headstone material like that.

Now if that head stone had said, "Got Wood?" that would've been hilarious.

I presume that it will include a bidet.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
