.....cruelty to the chickens....???

Costco's rotisserie chickens involve animal cruelty: lawsuit

.....Costco's hallmark $4.99 rotisserie chickens involve mistreated birds, two shareholders claim in a lawsuit filed this week in the retailer's home state of Washington.

The wholesale club opened a $450 million chicken processing plant in Nebraska in 2019 in an effort to control costs, and the suit filed Monday in the Superior Court of King County accuses Costco of "illegal neglect and abandonment" in the facility. The suit alleges that Costco intentionally breeds chickens too large to stand on their own, and the "disabled birds slowly die from hunger, injury and illness."

The company's practices are illegal in Iowa and Nebraska, two states where Costco keeps chickens, the complaint further alleges.

"Once lauded as an innovative warehouse club, Costco today represents a grim existence for animals in Nebraska who are warehoused in inescapable misery," claimed Alene Anello, president of the group Legal Impact for Chickens, in a statement. "Costco's executives must agree to follow both the law and general decency in order for Costco to resume being seen as an industry leader," added Anello, who represents the shareholders.

Costco spokespersons did not respond to requests for comment.

Sold under the retailer's brand name, Kirkland Signature, the whole chickens are known for their taste and low cost, selling for $4.99 since 2009. Costco sells the birds at a loss, betting members will be enticed by higher-margin products on their way to the hot rotisserie chickens.

The suit follows allegations from another animal rights group about Costco's chickens. In 2021, Mercy for Animals covertly filmed scenes of injured and deformed chickens in a crowded warehouse at a Costco chicken farm in Nebraska. The video became fodder for an essay in the New York Times.

The company's roasted rotisserie chickens have also drawn fire for their sodium content, as have other inexpensive rotisserie chickens offered by other chains. A salt solution is often injected into the cooked birds to increase flavor and tenderness, leaving Costco's chicken with 460 mg of sodium in a three-ounce serving, Consumer Reports reported last year.

Costco sold 106 million rotisserie chickens in 2021.

chicken..........little.....?!

I imagine any regulatory agencies are feckless? Or are we just so litigious we go to court?

Look up "Meat King" chickens. That breed is designed to bulk up in 6 to 8 weeks from incubator hatchlings to harvesting weight. They are incapable of supporting their weight at full growth, and their circulatory systems can't sustain the pressure needed to keep them alive. They keel over at 8 weeks.

My daughter raised a 'flock' of 12 Meat Kings about 8 years ago. They were all dead by the end of summer. Only one got a name, and it died, too. It had a problem with its hip joints and could not stand after 2 weeks of age. The other birds picked on it and would not let it access food or water. We housed it separately from the others, and it could feed and drink if the bowls were placed close enough to reach. At night, it had a dark cloth over its cage to keep it away from predators (mink, foxes, raccoons, coyotes); it would sing itself to sleep every night.

One of the flock just keeled over and died a week before 'harvest day'.

The lawsuit claims of 'intentional breeding' seem overstated.
The grim existence holds true for just about any meat animal raised for 'harvesting'.

Thanks for reading.

I don't remember what breed of birds was used in Super Size Me 2, but they had many of the same problems. Out of maybe two thousand birds, they would have 2 to 10 dead every day after about five weeks of growth. Many of them had heart attacks because the circulatory system could not keep up with the growth rate.

Seems as though you don’t think Costco laid an egg with the chicken they sell.

I'll have to wait until next week to say the same, but I am in anticipation.

I'm saddened to hear that these chickens aren't treated well, but it would be some irony to treat them 'humanly' only to kill them for my epicurean pleasure.

But, a man's gotta eat, and this is one of the few occasions where the price of a chicken product is cheaper than beef.

Besides...

It is a Chicken and egg thing.
If people didn't eat chicken, the chicken would have never been born as a food product, so it was only conceived for that purpose. That being said, the short time the chicken is on earth, it should not be abused.

Yeah. It's hard to justify if they are really treated so horribly. There are other things to eat. But, damn, are they inexpensive.

But, damn, are they inexpensive.

IMO its the only thing they have going for them.

On one hand, I understand being busy and not wanting to cook, on the other...just get a decent bird and roast it yourself. It will be _much_ better.

The "thought" of roasting my own chicken was so wholesome, romantic/idealistic. The actual process of buying, prepping, cooking, checking, serving, and cleaning was a huge WTF process I will not be doing again for a long time, if ever. It's lunch, not Thanksgiving!

It gets easier when you do it more frequently. Well, maybe not the dishes.

Yeah, that dishes part... I will occasionally do a roast chicken for myself. As my son has finally got a full time job and moved out, it will be part of a week of meals. But the cooking part is easy, drain excess fluids, season, and then roast in a covered Corningware roaster I have. Cook at 325 for 45-60 minutes, and its done.

The other hard part is getting a decent chicken. The growing and handling practices of the major suppliers have all resulted in birds packed with more injected "basting" and less flavorful meat.

I cook a great deal, and I can usually make a dish better than most restaurants, but the inexpensive cost of the Costco chicken is too hard to pass up.

Also, a secret: cook that Costco chicken once you get home. I find it's undercooked. At 375f for about 25m, it's a much tastier bird.

I take the easy route on that one - avoid the major suppliers. Well, I guess thats not easy on the wallet.

I avoid the cheap birds and go for middle or high end. Often times I can't tell the difference between a $12 bird and a $20 bird. Trader Joes whole birds are pretty good.

Huh.

I'll give that a shot, though I've been good with it off the rack, so far.
