FU on stroke

The doctor thought the problem was high blood pressure (224/120+) so she didn’t send me on the one hour trip for the clot buster. Then she turned me loose with no medication or instructions. My nurse practitioner niece reran the CT scan and determined it WAS a stroke, but too late to do much about it. My niece has been trying to safely lower the BP by adding a diuretic to my 75mg atenolol beta blocker. It won’t go below 200 except 180 once. I’ve had a headache since 6/7. She is running a convention this week. I’m going to call a lawyer. I believe I am forever damaged because of the doctor.

@#$%& that sucks. Get better and a good lawyer.

When I spent the night in a hospital last July because I thought I was having some heart issue, they were giving me a blood check every couple of hours looking for troponin.

Isn't there something they look for in possible stroke victims?

They do a head CT scan and then another one later (not sure how much later) and then compare the results. That’s a crude description.

Holy $#!%@^! I didn't think it was possible to have a BP that high. Have and docs figured out why that is happening?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

That really sucks. Hope you feel better, soon. I agree that the BP should be brought down, but slowly . Don't have it dropped immediately as that will cause problems in itself.

Not a doctor, but if I remember correctly, they can’t use a clot buster with that kind of uncontrolled BP. They should have been able to fix that first, though.

Your doctor may have done you a favor avoiding the clot buster.
Not a Doctor either, but two of my ski buddies, one a Medical director and ER Doctor, the other, a former surgical nurse and sales rep for the major clot buster firm (when it was first introduced), and I discussed this on a chair lift ride, just last season.
In patients with normal vital signs, there is controversy regarding efficacy vs risk, using the clot buster, since it often causes other, just as bad problems, one major one is aneurisms. Regular high blood pressure would seem to be counterintuitive, more so, your extreme high blood pressure (my opinion).
Good luck with everything and hope you can resolve the blood pressure issue.

My father in law pulled numbers even scarier than that. One time they checked his BP at a dental appt and his numbers were such they called an ambulance to take him to the ER.

You can call a lawyer all you want but my advice is to put that down the list a bit and FIND A DIFFERENT DOCTOR now.

That doctor came with the ER. She breezed through twice and that was it.

"Holy $#!%@^! I didn't think it was possible to have a BP that high"

Twenty+ years ago, I responded to an aided case. The senior there reported he just got back from his MD's office where his BP was measured at 300 over I forget what! His MD had BEGGED this guy to allow said MD to call for an ambulance so the senior could be IMMEDIATELY admitted. The gent adamantly refused insisting he had to "go home and tell his wife". Of course, I requested an ambulance but, after 30 minutes, NO ambulance was available. I already had him on high flow O2. I advised dispatch that I was going to transport him to the local hospital myself. I carried the O2 kit and walked him into the ER. I advised the Triage Nurse that his systolic BP was over 300. I already knew that this was serious but, the look on the nurse's face really said it all re just how bad it was. My senior went right to the front of the line.

It’s great you have such an excellent ally in both keeping a meticulous timeline and a record of specifics, while you focus on doing what needs to be done to work back to getting things on an even keel.

When the time comes, best of luck bringing those responsible to account for what sure sounds like a flawed response to a very serious situation.

Take care.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
As of July 16, 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now available by simply dialing 988. The previous number, 1-800-273-8255, will remain active.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
