Just got a call from a credit collection agency, claiming that I was overdue for a $4,000 loan from 2017 that I never took out! They claimed that the original creditor notified me via mail-which never happened! And they're threatening to report me to Experian for a loan I never took out! B*st*rds!!!

At best, somebody scammed them at worst, it's a total, sophisticated, scam. They don't have records of the original debt (or at least wouldn't provide them to me. I told them to have their lawyers call me, which is supposed to happen at 1:30. We'll see.

The debt collection agency is Addison Rockwell, in Georgia. The supposed debt originator doesn't even exist! The only reference in all of Google-land was two links, saying "Hey, this scammer called me."

What a frickin' waste of my time!

If I recall correctly, I’ve read that raising the specter of contacting the State Attorney Generals office has considerable effect on getting bullying collection agencies to back off.

I usually talk over them and say, "Not interested. Take this number off your call list. Good bye." in the first 3 seconds. If a long lost relative of mine passed away and the estate is looking for me because they left me a large sum of money, I'm screwed!

One, have any further contact be by mail. That is your right under the law. They must provide details on the loan identifying the creditor, amount owed, and additional information such as last payment and original creditor if the debt has been sold. Do not agree to anything over the phone, they are trying to get you to do so as that can make the debt "active" again if it ever actually existed.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has a good summary of this on their site - [www.consumerfinance.gov]. You may have additional protections under state law.

Don’t take that 1:30 call. It’s a scam.

I answer repeat human unknowns like this:
"It's done. It got messy. There's blood everywhere. Call Mr Kaplan."

human callers don't call back, nor do they (apparently) ever call the "authorities". Wonder why?

"Please send all correspondence by U.S. mail." That way you can turn them in for mail fraud, too. If they ask for an address, give them "Office of State Attorney General, Fraud Division" etc.

Good question. The answer is that I had very similar bad experiences in the past.

It would be different if you had some actual indication they were actually pursuing this beyond a 'your computer has a virus' phone call.

As mentioned earlier, I too don't answer if I don't know the number or the CID is sketchy.

If they leave a message, maybe I'll get back to them, but for the most part— no.

This is why I answer calls in German. Or French. Or minimalistic Mandarin. Scammers get confused and give up.

Fake or zombie debt collectors get told to send me everything in writing including proof of this actual debt. And the collection agencies that call with my late father in laws debt get referred to the Ohio Attorney general for daring to try to collect after probate.

Go to Clark.com, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and your Attorney General.

Demand proof of debt in writing...no more phone calls, all correspondence via US mail.
