An inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds in later life is linked to nearly double the risk of death from any cause within the next decade, according to a new study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The study involved 1,702 people ages 51 to 75 living in Brazil, who were asked to balance unsupported on one leg during an initial check. Researchers told the participants to place the front of the free foot behind the standing leg, keep their arms by their sides and eyes fixed straight ahead. Up to three attempts on either foot were permitted.

Researchers then monitored the participants after the initial checkup for a period of seven years, during which 123 – 7% – of the people being studied died. The proportion of deaths among those who failed the test (17.5 %) was significantly higher than deaths among those who were able to balance for 10 seconds (4.5%).

Surprisingly, it was easier on my leg with the bad knee, but I think I passed on both.

I saw that.

A couple of years ago, it was How well can you get up from a sitting position on the floor to standing, with points added/deducted for form.

That's what i've noticed...about older guys at least.

Problems walking seem to presage death within just a few years.

The latter happened to my dad end of last year.

Sadly, we could never convince him to go through physical rehab to keep his ability to walk/balance.

The standing on one leg isn't the problem. It's holding the free leg bent up without getting a charlie-horse. ;)

And successfully putting the free leg through your underwear w/o falling down...

I wonder if being increasingly sedentary plays a role. I notice that if I spend more time than normal sitting in a chair, as one does when using a computer, that my balance is a bit worse until I can "walk it off".

my spouse is a PT. She's on me all the time to get up and walk every 30 mins. Even if up & down the stairs. I admit, I do not always.

I can still put on underwear standing up without falling over, and can take off my socks standing up as well by pulling up my leg, and crossing my ankle across my knee as I slightly bend to take the sock off. I'm guessing I'm ok for now.
