World's largest freshwater fish found in Mekong, scientists say

A 300kg (661lb) stingray caught in the Mekong river in Cambodia is the
biggest freshwater fish ever documented, scientists say.
It unseated the previous record-holder, a 646lb (293kg) Mekong giant
catfish caught in Thailand in 2005.
There is no official record-keeping or database of the world's biggest
freshwater fish.

The stingray was tagged & successfully released.

I would have guessed that a Sturgeon was the biggest freshwater fish.

The largest sturgeon on record was a beluga female captured in the Volga Delta in 1827, measuring 7.2 m (23 ft 7 in) long and weighing 1,571 kg (3,463 lb).

But they're like salmon which migrate into fresh water to spawn.

I saw that yesterday, but it didn't say what they did with the Ray. I am glad it was released. Those things are amazing to watch in the water

Looks like this as an adult...



And is endangered.

But the babies are sold in pet stores as a 2-inch "pangasius" for little kids to raise in small tanks. (200 gallons is a good starter-size for these fish.)
