Car door handle question
Posted by: ka jowct
Date: June 22, 2022 12:22PM
I’m not a car person, have never owned one, but of course I see lots of them every day. Today while waiting for a bus, I saw one with door handles flush with the door itself. There was no way to grip them. I assume this is something you have to get at via a fob. What would be the advantage, though? Just looking cool? I don’t know what brand it was, but the insignia resembled the one at the bottom right. The bus came before I got a picture of the car.

It is a Tesla.
The handle pops out, when you get close.
Is it a feature or not, up to you, lol

As RGg said, it’s a Tesla. On the Model X and S, the handles pop out. In the other models (3, Y), it’s a manual handle. The handles pivot -press one side into the car door with your thumb and the other side pops out to to be grasped and pulled by your fingers.

It’s more aerodynamic. It’s also more problematic, if you happen to live in a wintery climate and the door handle becomes covered with ice.

It's not without problems.

What is the procedure for opening a Tesla with a dead battery?

• Get an external 12V jump starter
• Locate the tow eye cover on the front bumper on the driver’s side. The tow cover is usually a large circle. Pop it out by pressing on the uppermost right of the cover till it pushes inside, then pull the cover in your direction.
• Next, you will notice two wires connected to that cover or they will be inside a hole and you will be needed to pull them out slowly.
• Attach the 12V jump starter’s cables to the car’s cables. Start by connecting the jump starter’s red positive cable to your Tesla red positive cable. Next, connect the 12V jump starter’s black negative cable to your car’s black negative cable.
• Employ power using your external jump starter to pop the frunk open.
• After opening the frunk, disconnect the cables. Start with the black and then the red one.
• Attach the wires back to the tow cover and place the tow cover back by placing the wires into the opening and aligning the cover into place, beginning with the bottom left corner first, then pushing it into position.
• Next, remove the large black plastic panel housing the 12V lead-acid battery. In most cases, it is based above the frunk compartment. Besides, no tools are needed to open the housing.
• After opening the frunk, you will see the black cabin intake panel, which is usually located on the driver’s side of the car. This panel can also be removed by pulling the clips upwards.
• Next, you can attach the red positive cable from the jump starter to the red positive terminal on the 12V battery. Additionally, attach the black negative cable from the jump starter to the black negative terminal on the battery.
• Switch on power from the external jump starter
• Give the car battery about 10 minutes. After a short while, the car will power up its computers. Additionally, you will see the touchscreen turn on.
• After powering the car, disconnect the cables. Normally, you should start by disconnecting the black cable and later on, the red cable.
• Return the black panels you had removed earlier by popping them back in position. Ensure the panels are properly aligned before pushing them in place. Handle them with care as they are very fragile.
• At this juncture, you can open the door even if the main traction 400V battery doesn’t have power. The power in the 12V battery is enough to allow you to open the door and other auxiliary systems.
• Lastly, drive to a charging station to charge your car and you should not turn off the car. If you do so, you may get stuck in the car if you have not fully charged it.

Yeah, the electrically-actuated flush door handles fall under the heading of "Unnecessary Geegaws" for me too. Subaru showed the world how to do far simpler fully mechanical flush door handles back in the 1980s with their XT-

But they never caught on for whatever reason, even on other Subarus. As a side note, how many of you had forgotten the XT even existed?

The 2nd Gen Ford Probe was pretty Spaceship looking. too!

It is frustrating when engineers redesign things to be "better" in some way, but don't fully understand and appreciate the reasons why the old design was the way it was. Hint... it's not because someone hadn't already thought of the new design (as Thrift Store Scott illustrated).

Consideration for longevity and failure modes are too undervalued in today's disposable society.

I don't know, I've had to replace lots of old-style door handles. It's a really high use/abuse part of a vehicle. I'm sure most of those style door handles belong to Teslas, but there are others that have them (e.g. Kia EV6). I feel like I would have to live with one for awhile to see if they function nicely. Some things are initially annoying but become more efficient when you get accustomed. The mini-learning curve can pay off.

Unnecessary Geegaws - great band.
I'm sure them hidden door handles account for at least .000000001% better MPG, when you're going down hill with the engine off.
You can't have enough dinky little solenoids in a $80k beast with too much gak already.

Well frick, anything more than a Lada is an unnecessary gewgaw if you think about it. Every car you've ever posted on this forum is a large unnecessary gewgaw.

edit: And expensive. And probably not that good at it's primary function.

My car has no door handles, I just basically press outward on the in-board side of the door panel. There is a touch sensitive button or two on the door on the inside of that notch. Press the button with your fingers pointing towards the front of the car and the door unlocks and pops open a bit allowing me to pull it open the rest of the way:

Sure, retracting flush door handles don't add any utility but I still like them.

They're mainly a design cue, as far as I can tell, and I like the design.

But if a manufacturer is going all out for minimum aerodynamic drag, that all out it is.

How exactly do you drive a Tesla with a dead battery to a charging station?

I saw one with door handles flush with the door itself. There was no way to grip them...

It's not just Teslas. Various brands have/had models with 'flush' handles.
Dodge Vipers come to mind and iirc there are some Ferrari & Lambo
models too. Lots of other less exotic models too.

Since the premise is that one is driving to a charging station, I'll go out on a limb and posit the battery isn't dead, but lower than fully charged.

So leave the car on and exit or nap.

Can the car be locked when outside it, with it 'on'?

That last bullet point seems in conflict with the one immediately preceding it.

I actually prefer hand crank windows, especially on smaller cars where it isn't that hard to reach the passenger side crank.

I was sired and raised by one of those of the highest order, one who to this day still says you shouldn't buy a car with power steering, power brakes, or automatic transmission because "They haven't worked all the bugs out of those systems yet". If he had been born just a few years earlier he'd probably be saying how cars are just a fad and how "The horseless carriage will never replace the horse!".
