This hotspot stuff works

I'm using my iPhone 7 as a personal hotspot: I discovered that cable/internet at this location got shut off as of (apparently) today. Pretty cool to have this workaround.

Yes, you can connect to it with a desktop or laptop just like connecting to any other wifi source.

I do that at work exclusively. I connect my iMac to my iPhone and use the internet that way. I do not want my employer snooping into my finances or macresource wanderings. My Windows work computer is connected to their intranet and is fairly locked down.

Yes, you can connect to it with a desktop or laptop just like connecting to any other wifi source.

I thought that but the phone doesn't show on my wifi pulldown list.

It shows fine on the iPads but never has on any of the iMacs, maybe a configuration thing? If I could use it I'd be able to drop the cable backup connection that I have to offset temporary loss of wifi access.

That’s exactly what I’m doing. MacBook Pro: go into Network/Wifi settings and select your mobile device from the list. When you switch on the hotspot on the phone, it generates a password, which I assume you can change if you want. You use that password in your Mac’s settings.

That's just it. The issue for me is that my desktop will read my cable & T-Mobile wifi and about a dozen neighbors including printers but not the phone.

Use a hotspot on my iPhone XS to connect my laptop. Sometimes I have to turn it off and then back again for it to show up on the laptop.

When I had to take care of kids myself and one needs to be at soccer practice and other needs to do online homework, there's nothing quite like a mobile hotspot and small laptop so you can do your 2 parent things at once.

My level of technical incompetence is truly daunting, I still can't find any of the 3 iPhone hotspots on any of the iMacs.

I find that I have to go to the system icon and open the hot spot section. Then it shows up.

Not sure what you mean, it broadcasts to the iPads sitting in the same room with the desktop.

So your phone never shows up in the list? Do you turn on "Allow other sto join" on your phone? You probably do, but just in case…

I like the "lanmanuelmirada" name that shows up here right under my phone.
