Why can't an EV soiund like an ICE?

"According to a recently disclosed USPTO filing, Hyundai and Kia are planning on implementing a way for their EVs to simulate the existence of an internal combustion engine (ICE) under the hood."

Thank God. I live in San Francisco, EV central, and the gentle swoosh of an ICE traveling under 25 has been replaced by every variety of spaceship noise you can imagine, especially when backing up. It sounds like a Jetsons skyway around here. Blech.

Quite a range of sounds!

Our Leaf makes a beeping noise when in Reverse which I find to be very loud inside the car, but outside it seems not too bad. The Lexus hybrid next door makes a glorious almost orchestral sound when backing up, but no angels have descended, yet.

My Bolt EV makes what I call the Cylon Raiders sound when going less than 14 mph. It makes me laugh when I hear it. I certainly don't feel a need for an ICE sound.

I think it can absolutely be fun for the owner. But when every new car makes its own distinct science fiction whir, it creates a very noticeable soundscape.

If you're going to make an EV sound like an ICE, make it a two stroke engine.

70s version or the remake?

Yeah, I kind of think the nicest things about the sound of EVs is the relative quiet. Other than the safety issue, I'd rather them be silent.

But they can be dangerous for the blind. I get that. My Prius can be rolling slowly, and unless there are pebbles in the tire tread, you can't hear it at all on the battery.

Several US ICE muscle cars with less than powerful engines use external speakers to make them sound like throaty hi-po V8s. I suppose you could do the same for an EV. However, give me a quiet swoosh from an EV as I blow the doors off a Mustanmaro any day.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Why can't cars broadcast a signal to a phone or other device carried by the blind? I'm tired of all this unnecessary noise.

I'm not really convinced that EVs make zero noise. Tires make a fair amount of sound.

They should sound like something that cause one to turn a look - a galloping horse? A trolley's ding ding ding? That should be used only for city streets, Malls, parking lots, etc. Not for suburban or rural or highway driving.

I would really enjoy having a trotting horse sound!

yes, but without rocks in the tread, and slow speed on new asphalt, they are vewwy vewwy qwuite. (said in an Elmer Fudd voice)

I know BMW had a composer make their sound.

You might wish for quiet if sponsored EV sounds spread.

I believe there is a noise requirement that cars traveling under 35 MPH must make a sound similar to an ICE car in order for pedestrians to hear them. My 2014 makes this noise when in drive even when stopped but not when in neutral. My 2013 does not, it’s only sound is the tire noise.

I believe it's under 30KPH (19mph).

Neither my 2014 Prius nor 2015 Leaf make any noise in forward motion but both make beeping sound in reverse.

Several US ICE muscle cars with less than powerful engines use external speakers to make them sound like throaty hi-po V8s. I suppose you could do the same for an EV. However, give me a quiet swoosh from an EV as I blow the doors off a Mustanmaro any day.

A lot of cars have "piped in", or supplemental engine noise. The Ford Mustang has a "pipe" that allows sound to come in, as does the Porsche Cayman. The Kia Stinger produces engine sounds with the sound system when you drive it hard, which is becoming increasingly common.

Of course none of those three are EVs.

If you're going to make an EV sound like an ICE, make it a two stroke engine.

You also need to make it smell like a two stroke engine.
