The handle on the toilet was starting to get a little tough to turn, so why not disassemble it and clean it up.

Yeah.

The tank has a lot of hairline cracks in the glaze or surface, but no water leaks, so no worries.

Except when I tried to loosen the nut inside the tank to remove the handle, the corner of the tank broke off, along one of the hairline cracks that ran across the center of the hole.

So I'm holding a corner chunk of the tank and the handle in one hand, and a pair of Channel-Locks in the other.

Still no leak from the tank, as the water level i s 2"+ below what was the hole for the handle.

Firstly, I need a strong glue for the ceramic or porcelain (?) tank.

Maybe of some consideration, I'm not sure, is that the chunk fits perfectly revealing only the aforementioned hairline crack, until I put the lid on the top of the tank.

The corner chunk is held in place and can't be moved, so so far, so good.

But I'm wondering if it's glued in place without the gap, will the lid put pressure on the now-gapless crack and cause another, potentially bigger problem.

Can I replace just the tank and not the whole toilet?

I realize the glue fix should be considered temporary, and replacement is very likely in my future, I'd just prefer it not be in my immediate future.

Hurts like a bastid...

I used some Weld-Bond for a repair and had some left over. So I glued a lose piece of brick back onto a wall. That was 2 years ago and it's fine. I'd use Weld-Bond (or one of the other indoor/outdoor construction adhesives). If you're worried about the tank top hitting the repair area and causing it to fail you could put some plastic bumpers around the top but not on the repaired area to keep the tank top off the repair.

I'm learning to love 5-minute epoxy. Mixing step is a pain, but fast cure is so helpful when pieces are in places hard to clamp.

Regular Super Glue worked for me when I maybe, perhaps, did the exact same thing to my toilet tank...

Some tanks will fit other bottoms. But that could be a rpitfa.

Maybe, but you know it will crack the bottom when you try.

After you epoxy the piece together, get some fiberglass and put some, with epoxy over the break, inside to provide strength. Make it 1-2 inches wider, to carry the load-Pun not intended

I’d go superglue first. It’s almost like it was custom made for porcelain. I’m partial to the gel stuff. It’s a little easier to control. Works just the same.

(Actually, I’d just replace the terlett, but since that’s not what you asked…)

Epoxy is more likely to hold, though superglue may be a quicker fix. If you use superglue, make sure that you get some with a little viscosity. If the glue is too liquidy then it will get sucked into the porosity of the ceramic and won't bond the broken surface well.

Building salvage yards sometimes have used toilets that you may be able to purchase a tank from. Again, it will depend on the make and model. Separating the tank from the bowl of a 2 piece toilet is not too bad if they were assembled correctly with brass bolts. But I had one that was a RPITA a few years ago, mild steel bolts had been used and they rusted and expanded in the holes of the tank. Managed to get the remains out without cracking either part that time.

Some assembly required.

Maybe this is like putting your finger in a leak in the dike...and your toilet is giving you permission to go for a complete replacement. Next week your valve will leak, the following week the seat will crack...and then the wax ring will give out. Maybe a whole new toilet is the answer?
