Background: My dad worked for General Dynamics for about 30 years. I was looking at a mid century modern house on Zillow this weekend and I noticed this poster.

I was intrigued, because I had never seen a GenDyn poster before, and this one was so modern and so graphic, and why was the copy in Spanish? After doing a little research I found out about the designer and also about the purpose of the posters.

There are a series of them, as you will see in the link above. I love the nautilus one, as well as the one called Radiation Dynamics. IMHO, these are true works of art and also a great statement about the power of advertising and PR. I would LOVE to have several of these. I wish they could be reprinted, but apparently they haven't been.

There is also picture showing the designer working with his lithographer to print them. They were done the old fashioned way, printed from a stone, hence the name lithography. Most lithographs now are printed from metal plates, but I have actually printed lithographs from stones and let me tell you, it gives me an even greater appreciation for the beauty of these pieces.
I hope someone enjoys this as much as I did. grinning smiley

Below is the nautilus one. The sub division was called Electric Boat, which I always thought was funny.

Cool. Did you find out why it was in Spanish?

EDIT - maybe I should read the article!

The posters were designed in several languages; English, French, Japanese, Hindi, Russian, and German. These nations were committed at the time to developing atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Nitsche borrowed heavily from the Modern Art movement to evoke dynamism and innovation.

They obviously did at least the one in Spanish, too.

I really love that design aesthetic, with some reservations here and there. But I think the reservations are mostly related to smoke-filled rooms. smiling smiley

Yeah, people can definitely go overboard with the MCM vibe.

I too would love to own several of these but alas. I do not have the means to be an art collector.

An original of one of the Submarine/Nautilus prints is ONLY $2800.00 delivered to the USA.
