Longstanding Thunderbolt and network-attached storage company Drobo filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late June, and will hold its first creditors meeting on July 17.

First formed as Data Robotics in 2005, Drobo manufactured solutions for remote and network storage. Parent company StarCentric filed bankrupcy papers with the California Northern Bankruptcy Court (San Jose) on June 20, 2022.

According to official court documentation, the company is to hold its first creditors meeting on July 19. There is also a final deadline for filing claims against the company, which is October 17, 2022.

They haven’t had consistent product or service in a long time. They have been effectively dead for at least a year. Loved the thunderbolt speed but I replaced with Synology and am much happier overall.

Who do we like for a NAS now, QNAP, Synology or roll your own?

I've got a few Drobos, and haven't had any failures, yet.

I had one problem recently, but DiskWarrior it, though it tooks days of churning drives.

My big lament is getting info about care and feeding, etc., from the forums.

A fair source of information, most of the time, they'll probably cease to exist.

There's the answer to my question.

It is what it is.

I have used Synology for several years and have been happy with them. QNAP is also good (from what I have read) but has had some security issues recently leaving their users vulnerable to attacks.

Another vote for Synology. My Dropbox has been a doorstop for years.

Didn't Drobo use a PROPRIETARY ENCRYPTION so that when a Drobo "died" the user was basically SOL unless he ponied up to buy a new Drobo unit? Between that and the high prices Drobo charged, I never went with Drobo.

I think I tried them when they were new and wasn’t impressed. Seemed like you saved some money and got something that was slower and less reliable. Never even realized they made a thunderbolt version.

I have a Drobo and when it works it's great. But the problem arises when I have to reboot the Mac it's connected to. Then it's a long-involved dance of restarting, turning off, and back on various things to get the @#$%& thing to show back up on the desktop. I'd REALLY love to move away from it but I don't want a NAS. I just want a solid external RAID that I can plug into my mini. Mini plus DAS = NAS. I've already got the computer part so no need to spend big bucks on a NAS.

Any recommendations for a 5 disk RAID box? Preferably one with hardware RAID.

I have been using Highpoint Tech for 20 years. First with their PCI-X RAID cards in PowerMac G5 towers and currently Thunderbolt RAID external boxes attached with 2018 Mac Minis

QNAP makes a good cheap 4-drive box, the TR-004. I have three of them. Two are expansions off of and controlled by my NAS. One is direct-attached to a Mac.
