Rolled my eyes at Whole Foods yesterday

Sheesh. At Whole Foods in Bellevue WA yesterday while we ate on the patio, I noticed more than a few big, expensive SUVs (Porsche, Range Rover, Lexus, etc.) with their engines running and windows up for ten minutes or more, with the drivers in the driver seat, many on their phones. It was a sweltering 75 degrees out. Not what I would have expected to see.

end rant

I'd expect that. If you are spending a premium to shop at WF, what does one care a few extra gallons in your $100k car?

And you can go to any field and find people in their suvs and pickup trucks doing the same.

Hurts like a bastid...

I wonder if it was people doing work calls. Unfortunately, I've had to do that on occasion while traveling. It may be too hot or cold, too noisy, etc to open the windows. In my case, I need to be careful with who might overhear the conversation. It's one of the downsides of having to travel for business.

I thought Whole Food customers would be more "woke."

You’d be surprised, their customers tend to be the wealthy. Whole Foods figured out a good grift and ran with it.

Exactly. When you look at it from a conspicuous consumption angle, where Biff and Muffy get to brag about how much more they're paying for "Certified Organic" at Whole Foods than they would have for the icky peasant-quality version of the same stuff at Piggly Wiggly, it all makes sense.

This just means that gas prices are too low.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I was in there last week and they called an ambulance for a guy who accidentally got gluten on his tongue.

The one in Little Rock? I’ve been going there a couple times a week since the early 90’s and have yet to witness anything exciting!

No, that was a halfway attempt at a joke. But I had that one in mind.

Do you suppose Whole Foods has ever seen an EBT (food stamp) card or would know what to do with one if presented?

I’ve seen people use them in the Whole Foods in the Pearl District here in Portland on multiple occasions. They have armed guards to control the “houseless”.

Hard to fathom why bereft people who depend on food stamps would use that small amount to buy food at BezoFood unless they have no other options.

It's not just Whole Foods. It's drive-up's like at McDonalds, the bank, Costco gas pumps. And it's not limited to expensive SUVs or simply because it's people with money to burn...

It's also about pollution, waste, and "climate change". It's people who talk the talk but don't walk the walk. I'm too hot. It's too noisy, especially when I'm on the phone. Yadda, yadda.

Yes, I know-there are elderly and ill folks and those with allergies, etc. But I also know of people who say they think "climate change" is real but drive 85 on the freeway because they're late for work or a meeting or their time is too valuable to drive no faster than the speed limit, or I have a Prius or a Volt so I should be able to drive faster than everyone who doesn't get the same mileage as I get. All sorts of rationalizations...

But that's the thing. Rules for others shouldn't apply to them-it's simple hypocrisy.

You drive faster than, say, the speed limit. As your speed increases, your fuel economy decreases and tailpipe emissions increase. Then you need to fill up sooner. And enough people who need to fill up sooner (demand) increases the price. The price of gas now, tho, is a different situation but I have seen people not altering their driving habits very much, probably because most people think this is temporary, but it won't drop much anytime soon.

As I go Up North to my cottage, I set my cruise control for the speed limit and I still am passed like I'm standing still-by all manner of vehicles. And I know that many of those flyers will give lip service to "climate change" but are not altering their driving habits to reflect that. Why not?

They talk the talk...

This just means that gas prices are too low.

Do you really think that these people will change their habits if gas goes to double in price? The impact to the rest of the country would be horrific before these people feel the impact.

Similar to people who constantly yack on their cell phones in public. If we do away with unlimited talk/data plans and go with $1 a minute cell phone rates people would keep their public cell phone conversations short. To the point. And only for urgent matters. No more, "So what else is new?"

So true, some of us rationalize speeding yet cry about global climate change. We deplored the 55 MPH National speed limit of decades ago even though it saved gas and the earth. I’ll take EVs and nuke power plants.

Yeah, it's a tax on people who can't afford to live close to their jobs (not wealthy, of course). I see expensive gas having a lot of good effects, but that's one effect that I don't think is ok.

The progressive part of our town is now full of old trucks like Broncos, etc. because they became cool. People are people, I guess.

One doesn't HAVE to spend a fortune at Whole Foods. If you stick with 365 products and don't buy your meat/poultry there, you can do okay by your wallet. If you don't want to feed your kids Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs for breakfast, healthier options are basically just as pricey at a regular grocery store as at WF.

That said, it's funny that folks disparage WF as being too expensive but also disparage Walmart for being @#$%& to their employees: in truth both are @#$%& to employees but at least folks with no money can fill up a cart at Walmart. So who is the company that is actually helping people? It makes for a good debate topic, yes?
