Chain-smoking John Daly remains golf's true rockstar – and every mother's worst nightmare.

Daly, with his paunch spilling out over his lurid orange baggy trousers, made quite the entrance, clattering over the players’ bridge that leads to the practice putting green. He was followed by his son and caddie John II, himself a promising golfer.

Daly senior’s trousers were emblazoned with the Hooters logo, as was Junior’s baseball cap. “Mummy, what is Hooters?” asked one little girl nearby.

Mummy did not reply. Hooters is the infamous American restaurant chain known for its scantily clad waitresses. But this is Daly, on the surface of it the anti-establishment outsider, in his element; everyone was in thrall, including a patrician-looking Scottish gentleman with a badge identifying him as a previous captain of St Andrews.

Is Pingpong a sport? Have you seen those olympic athletes expend energy with arms, legs, and core. They work up a sweat and no one is overweight at the Olympics. It is very aerobic.

Is shooting or archery a sport? No wearing, can be overweight doing it, exertion is extremely brief like golf. Not a sport, no aerobic exertion.

how about arm-wrestling?

I think golf is a sport. While it's not as physically demanding and doesn't require as much raw athleticism as some other sports, it does take a great amount of physical skill and coordination and golfers burn 1200-1500 calories (or more) playing 18 holes.

Yes, John Daly is out of shape. And it shows in the paltry number of PGA wins he has.

Yes, golf is a sport.

Sports like virtually any activity exists along a spectrum in many regards. Exertion is a ridiculously narrow criteria to hang a definition on.

But then gatekeeping is seldom mostly about any truly unbiased attempt to maintain a standard. The tone of the rhetoric alone usual quickly reveals that.
