I was a street/craft vendor in SF in the eighties. It was a standing joke that a path to great sales was to sell silkscreened sweatshirts at Fisherman's Wharf to all of the underdressed, freezing tourists who came to California expecting sunshine.

Most people in San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley still doesn't have air-conditioning.

Those guys that sell fleece make a mint selling to flip-flop shorts wearing tourists. Though now, post pandemic, I don't know what the norm is.

With all that heat in the interior, the entire west coast is getting the natural AC right now - the high pressure is just sucking in all that cold air at the ocean's surface.

Around here, the surface water temp is running 6-10°F below what's normal for late July. Lots of upwelling of cold water is keeping the beaches very cool. Just 3-4 miles inland, though … it's another story.

Yeah, it's really the whole near coast.

Got up to a sweltering 65 degrees here on Humboldt Bay... Meanwhile, 30 minutes drive inland, Willow Creek topped 94.
My friends in Redding and Sacramento keep telling me to @#$%& when I tell them the temperature here...

My cousin is doing construction work in Oregon and is gleefully sending weather reports daily.

We hate him as we swelter in 100+.

Today on the phone with someone from Columbus, OH.

"I think we're nearly as hot as you, its been in the 90s all week!"
Me: "I think we've have had two weeks straight of 100+, its stays 100 until 10pm. And August is our hottest month"
"At least then fall will be here, right?"
Me: "We don't really get fall until MidOctober"
Columbus: "I...am...so....sorry...."
Me: "So am I...so am i..."

Had a cousin that went to SF Giants game alone about a year before they moved out of Candlestick. Almost 80 F in Berkeley when she left, my mom told her to dress warmer but she didn't believe. She ended up choosing a $100 (in today's money) sweatshirt over hypothermia. That was an expensive game.

I think I still have my light fleece “SF” jacket I had to buy that day years ago, or freeze. And I’m from Minnesota.

It’s all about expectations.

I didn’t mention earlier, but I evidently developed what the ENT’s called “San Francisco Sinuses”…., so moving south to L.A. had the benefits of getting away from all of the relatives’ drama, going to an awesome school (UCLA), the incredible SoCal beaches, year ‘round sports environment, etc., and the added bonus of a massive reduction in sinus headaches and other sinus related maladies.

Temperature-wise, SF is it’s own enigma, so if you’re gonna spend any sort of real time there, you need to figure it out and adapt to it. The odds of SF weather adapting to you are pretty slim. Windbreakers are your friend in the Bay Area. The summer fog season comes with some pretty good breezes, so the windbreaker helps. For me, the cold wasn’t as stifling as the wind. Closer to, and in winter, The City gets plenty cold, and ya gotta layer up. Bad weather was my ticket to 49er games at Kezar Stadium, since princess mom didn’t want to mess up her hair; more live games for young me.

Candlestick was it’s own ecosystem, but as a die-hard Giants fan, it was part of your indoctrination into the fan club…. and most would say, well worth it. Biggest drawback was that it cost a lot of Giants fans’ favorite players a bunch of what elsewhere would have been some way better stats. Say hey woulda hit over 760 dingers, instead of being stopped at only 660. Just sayin’. But, hey, there’s never been a greater pride of The City, than Willie, at least until the Splash Bros have clawed close in recent years. Willie was kind enough to share the ‘Stick’s limelight with Joe What’shisname(no,notDiMaggio)theSFfootballJoe, but God bless SF and its funkadelic weather.

Gotta search ENT centric medical journals from the 1950’s & 60’s….

basically, overactive sinuses with too much pressure for humans to comfortably deal with.

July and Fogust are the dreariest months. Microclimates are a wonderful thing.
