Modern dish washers are very efficient, its okay to simply run more loads.

Is 'name' the model or the serial number?

I prefer to pre-soak my dishes overnight in the sink adjacent to the dishwasher and cram away. Only when they do not all fit, like after a large gathering, will I do a second load. But mainly I don’t wait until I have too many dishes.

Wife likes to cram in as much as possible. I just started a load that my wife would have likely waited for another day or so's worth of dishes/glasses to jam into it.

If one has enough dishes and utensils, it makes sense to let the dirty dished build up in the dishwasher until there's a full load, providing cleaning ability isn't impinged.

On the other hand, doing small amounts by hand, right away, often precludes the need to load up the dishwasher.

Matt,

Yups. Cramming a dishwasher is a bad idea. It will prevent the water jets from reaching all the dishes. I'm also a believer in _not_ letting dishes sit. The longer grime is allowed to stay on the dishes and dry onto them the less likely even the better machines will clean them properly. Doesn't matter if the dishwasher detergent manufacturer claims it can clean dishes that've been sitting and the grime is dried on.

Very water efficient! Heres a Technology Connections video about them!

Not sure I believe this. We have a middle of the range Bosch dishwasher that replaced a really old Kitchenaid. I am constantly amazed at how sparkling the dishes are that come out of it, no matter how full we cram it (and we pretty much don't turn it on unless there's no room left in there). I think that there are "contractor level" dishwashers out there that don't clean very well, but most higher end dishwashers do a great job even when crammed full of stuff.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
