Old HP Printer/New iPhone Brain Teaser..... Help!
Posted by: Buzz

Friends w/ older HP AIO OfficeJet printer want to print from iPhones. Printer does have its own old school wifi, but printer is currently hooked up to M1 Monterey iMac by USB, and is accessed via Printer Sharing by laptops, so its wifi isn't being used. It's too old for AirPrint.

How can a new iPhone 13 print directly to the OfficeJet? ....and what protocol(s) would/could be used to do so?
Once that's solved, we'll work on printing from the ancient iP5s.... Thanks.

Buzz,

What model Officejet? HP has a couple of iPhone apps for printing to their machines. Or, you can use a solution that is an app on the computer that makes even an old non-airprint friendly compatible with Airprint, i.e. printopia.

I use an Airport Express in a similar situation.

May have to give Printopia a test drive, looks promising.... thanks.

Not sure an AirPort Express is as viable; ours are in use here, and no spares readily available. For some reason, the printer didn't play nice when we tried to network it when the M1 iMac was new.... I did think about using one of the ethernet to USB network adapters I have in "the drawer", which would be akin to the AirPort Express, but opted for USB Printer Sharing from the M1 iMac instead.... until this new need popped up.

More homework. What fun! (or not)

Some printers will not have active Wi-Fi if USB is plugged in.
I would unplug it and give it a try.
