att has been charging a $1.99 'administrative fee' to post-paid plans for years.
A class action lawsuit was filed because the fee was hidden and characterized according to plaintiffs, as bait-and-switch pricing.
Under the $14M settlement between lawyers, att customers will get a small percentage of what att charged, and att gets to keep the rest of the for-profit add-on fee.
Plaintiff lawyers didn't want to take the case to trial, and
bailed settled when they felt they made enough off of att (my take).
The judge, for some reason, allowed the settlement to stand, netting plaintiff lawyers $3.5M for their trouble.
I got a text from att telling me, a customer since 2007, that I could file a claim by following the enclosed link or calling a toll-free number.
As I and many other customers found, the att link goes to blank webpage that never resolves.
The att $14M payout is just the cost of doing business.
This isn't the first, and with no meaningful accountability, it won't be the last, but such weak paybacks will remain the cost of doing business.
