Solar vs Generator

The 8-Bit guy decided to use a solar power system vs a generator for power backup..
[youtu.be]

The only thing I can think of would be to use a HeatPump A/C unit.

I watched that video when it came out and we had a discussion in the house here about how viable a similar off-grid system would be for us. I need that UFC guy of his to heft the panels onto my roof as we have an ideal lengthy southern-facing span for solar. But in reality we don't have the need for that as our power (heh, yeah jinx...) has been dependable for decades now.

I want to know the configuration of the solar system he said would cost north of $40K.

We installed solar here (20 panels with backup battery) fo half that.

I assume you have a roof top array? That does have a lower cost, that's why leasing companies want to go that way. I discussed in my post earlier about solar that I have a very large, for residential array, 34 panels, ground mount. Extra cost with 7 pile driven poles and ~150 feet of underground cable to connect. My bottom line was $52,785. Still worked better than expected, paid off loan in 4 yrs, 7 mo.

I have a similar, but better, system than the 8-bit guy. I have a Bluetti inverter/battery in the garage. I also have a 13 panel solar array with micro inverters. Three of the panels are on the garage roof (1050 watts) and feed micro inverters inside an electrical cabinet in the garage (this is unusual, micro inverters are usually on the roof underneath the panels). It is set up so that if we have a power failure, I go out to the garage, unplug the inverters from the grid, and plug them in series into the Bluetti. That will give me about 1,000 watts continuously 24/7 as long as I get at least partial sun during the day, enough to run the refrigerator, lights, and a number of minor appliances. This is my "poor man's Tesla power wall". Not as automatic as a $15K+ Tesla battery system, but it only cost about $1k.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
