Can I install OS X on a thumb drive?
Posted by: Zoidberg

I know this is a can of worms, but I'd like to install OS X on a thumb drive, with enough room left to install some repair and diagnostic utilities, a la Micromat's Protoge.

I'm pretty sure I can do this with an external drive -- I have an old 20GB drive lying around here in an On The Go case -- but it's FW400 only, which I do not believe can boot the new Intel Macs (or am I wrong about that?).

Thoughts, strategies, links to how-to pages?

First of all, the FW400 drive will boot on your intel mac just fine.

Second, here's my suggestion for the thumb-drive install: install a system onto the 20gb hd, and trim it down to fit onto the thumb drive. Then clone the drive to your thumb drive with CCC/SuperDuper/whatever. That should do it!

Do not be surprised if you see NO increase in speed (quite the opposite in fact) in booting using a thumb drive.

A friend of mine booted his Intel Mac off an 8GB drive he got and really, only booting from a CD would have been slower. It was awful.

The Protogo works well because it's that most rare of beasts, a FIREWIRE thumb drive.

Most consumer thumb drives just barely operate above USB 1 speed. If you're serious about this, look for "dual-channel" USB drives and prepare to pay a premium for them. Don't trust the advertised speeds, that's all marketing crap.

Hey, booting from a 20 GIG hard drive is likely to be not exactly fast, either. How old does a drive have to be to be only 20 GIGs? It's questionable how reliable that drive is, considering its age. Mileage might be a factor, too. A 20GB drive is an antiique by 21st Century standards. Doesn't mean it's useless...but I'd be thoughtful about what I use it for, or how much I'd expect to depend on it.

Used PortableOSX and DasBoot to set up the external 20; it's all there but Startup Disk (on my MacBook Pro) doesn't see it as a usable startup drive. Is it a blessing thing or is it because its FW400?

[ADDED] No, idiot, it's because you used a pre-Intel version of 10.4 to set up the external drive. Re-doing using the install disc that came with the MacBook Pro.
