Anyone ever been to South Africa? Any advice?

I'm headed to Cape Town in about 10 days for a commercial shoot.

Never been to that part of the world at all, so pretty excited.

If you've been, have must-sees, must-avoids, etc., please pass them on!

Hmm, wear sunscreen, don't drink the water, and try not to get sold into slavery?

I really don't know.

HIV is very big there. So are all the various versions ot Hepatitis. Seriously get ALL your shots (and then some). Read the CDC postings. Crime is also huge.

I've read that the rate of violent crime there has been stratospheric for years, though I have no idea whether it's in Cape Town, Johannesburg, out in the boonies, or a combination thereof. I'd definitely do some more research on that...

I was in Johannesburg a few years ago (played at a jazz festival), and it was an eye-opening experience. Homeless people all around, even in the fancy neighborhoods (which is where my hotel was). Most of the nicer homes and buildings had high stone walls with broken glass set into the top of the wall. On the trip from the airport, this is what the sign said at the end of our exit ramp: "Caution: known hijacking point."

Having said all this, I can also tell you that many of my musician friends liked Capetown a lot (unfortunately the artist I was touring with didn't stop there). I'm sure it's way different than Joburg.

The worst part of my trip? That's easy, it was the plane ride! 14 hours nonstop from JFK in coach...bring some Ambien. And if you're on SAA, they may still be partnering with Delta for frequent-flyer miles-- you'll be well on your way to a free ticket with one round-trip to SA. Good luck!

Going to the travel clinic today to check on shots. Read a good bit about crime and will be aware. Much worse in Jo'Berg, but still need to be conscious in Cape Town.

The crime is bad news. I go there often and have friends that live there. Taxis from Jo"berg airport are not safe. Use a car service arranged by your hotel.

As bad as the cities are, once you are off the beaten track you will find some the best people on earth
