I always thought that Office Space (film) was a reasonable success

But, I guess that it was a relative flop, according to Wiki. [en.wikipedia.org]

Those DVD sales helped, but I thought it would have been even more successful in second run and home copies.

It was a good mindless diversion as a movie.

It was especially interesting to see the DOS box pop up on the Mac. Guess they had a PC card in there somewhere, but why would the company spend extra for a Mac to run DOS software??

I think in order to be a cult classic, the movie has to fail, and then slowly develop a following over the subsequent years. Which also means slow VHS/DVD/BD/other sales initially and maybe never really successful volumes.

Yes, a cult classic for sure. Particularly resonant with the the Dot-Com era crowd.

I really enjoyed the first time I saw it when it came out on DVD, and then went to see it on the big screen for a 10th anniversary showing, back in 2009! Bill Lumbergh and Milton both made an appearance and signed a few staplers.

But the last time I watched it I was surprised by the low production quality, I guess it hasn't aged that well.

Very funny movie! Possibly funnier if you have worked in a dysfunctional office. I remember the days of those silly positive motivation posters everywhere and all the even sillier sayings (synergy!). Thank goodness those days are over.

That stapler wouldn't exist without Office Space. Swingline didn't make a red stapler at the time of the movie. They only made one after they received enough demand for it.

the later part of the movie gets less and less funny - the last couple of times I thought it was a good idea to watch it, I didn't finish. The first part is a 5star comedy, but it fades to a 1.5/2star.

I've only ever watched it once, and that was about a month ago. It was like the superhero origin story for memes. The change to the plot half way through was noticeably weak even as a first-time viewer. The finale was strong, I think, everything coming together nicely.

Came and went in the theaters in nothing flat, I remember seeing the poster one week and it was gone the next. I didn't go because the trailer (and the poster, for that matter) made it look terrible. Studio didn't know how to market it (in what would become a very familiar story for Mike Judge), but it found its audience a year or so later on home video.

I kept my ticket stub from Idiocracy, though; my local 'burb theater was one of the lucky ones that got it for its only week in wide release. I ever get a chance to meet Judge, I'm going to get it autographed...

Agreed

These are some cult films:

- Clerks
- Repo Man
- Rocky Horror Picture Show
- Oldboy


Edit: Cult films tend to be B-Movies. Get a copy of Michael J. Weldon's Psychotronic. A movie that's reviewed in that book, or its sequel, that did at least OK at the box office would be a good candidate to call a cult film.

Whole lot of big hits there. Actually ALL of them were hits, with the lone exception of Blade Runner. E.T. was the biggest hit of all time, and held that title for 15 years.

I left a dot bomb era tech giant and when I explained to people what it was like working there, they kept asking if I had seen Office Space. It was very much like my life.

Over the years I caught bits and pieces of it on TV when flipping channels but never watched the whole thing from start to finish until just a few years ago when I noticed that it was one of the in-flight movies available on American Airlines.
