Boy is that cardboard box UGLY

Just got the new refurb 13" white MacBook and the refurb cardboard box certainly does no justice to the lovely little machine inside.

Fed Ex delivered it at work at 8:30 this morning and I had to leave it alone ALL DAY knowing that the wife should get to open it herself.

She was duly excited when I brought the box into the house. We took it out of the box but again were delayed as we watched the thunderstorm "with a history of large hail and capable of creating tornados" go by. Other than some heavy rain and 15 seconds of pea sized hail, nothing exciting.

But then back to setting up the MacBook. Took quite a while for the various updates to happen over the wireless network, but we got it up and running. First lesson was web browsing with Safari. Tomorrow we take on e-mail.

She has been completely computer resistant to this point, but I've discovered that it is the messy office I keep that has been the biggest issue. Now that she has her very own MacBook she is eager to learn how to use it. There's stuff I don't know how to use! I've never gotten into iChat, and of course my iMac was the version just before Apple included the camera, so I'll have to learn how to use that.

Anyway, we have a convert in the house and she is really eager to learn (at her own pace, of course). BTW - I've put a link to Macintosh Tutor 101 on the desktop and will encourage her to take a look. I'll probably have to take a look too!

Posting from a previously ugly-brown-boxed (with audible rattling inside when the Fedex guy handed it to me) MBP C2D. It's just as pretty now as anyone else's.

Got a silent upgrade (not sure what sound the noisy ones make, but...), rather than a 120GB HDD, they gave me 160GB.

Ugly, schmugly.

eh, so you can't sell the empty box on ebay to some nimrod.

And a nice portable wireless laptop is an immediate cure for messy desk syndrome. Screw the desk- sit in a comfy chair with your feet up !

Refurbished MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - White
13.3-inch glossy widescreen display
1280 x 800 resolution
1GB memory (2x512MB SODIMMs)
80GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Built-in iSight camera

No silent upgrades that i've noticed (80GB drive for sure ... didn't look to see if there was additional memory, but I'd be REAL surprised).

We've only used this at the kitchen table at night, so the conditions have been pretty controlled, but I sure do like the screen. Makes my G5 iMac look old (not that I'd trade the large screen for a clear, bright small one).

I'm most pleased about the excitement my wife is showing for this! I have be very careful that I don't start making it look the way I want it instead of the way she wants it. I did, however, change the hard drive icon to a white MacBook icon and renamed it Kathy's MacBook to give it a personal look.

I had the rattle in the box, too. Figure it was the remote control.

Not every woman is so shallow as to think that price > value.

When the diamond in her ring shattered last year, we added to the insurance money and "upgraded" a bit which should take care of any threats of being too cheap. At least for a while.
