Yes, but Russian laws still require a trial and evidence be presented. Whether that evidence is genuine or planted is another matter, and usually not questioned. Conviction rate in cases is 90% or higher in Russian courts.

That's OK. If they're going to do a deal then Putin has to make it a magnanimous gesture on his part.

I'm not sure that getting conviction rates from a criminal defense lawyer's website is the most accurate source.

Wikipedia cites the The Bureau of Justice Statistics (part of the USDOJ), summarizing here:

"In 2018, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that among defendants charged with a felony, 68% were convicted (59% of a felony and the remainder of a misdemeanor) with felony conviction rates highest for defendants originally charged with motor vehicle theft (74%), driving-related offenses (73%), murder (70%), burglary (69%), and drug trafficking (67%); and lowest for defendants originally charged with assault (45%)."

Felony only, not misdeameanors, though.

That's my understanding as well, they get paid big money in Russia and very little in US. How is that even possible?

I have never even watched a game of men's basketball on TV. I obviously wouldn't even dream of watching a game of women's basketball. If precious few people are watching something, where does the money for the salaries come from?

Wow, that sounds pretty sexist. I don't watch basketball either, but I wouldn't say "I wouldn't even dream of watching a game of women's basketball." While I haven't watched a full game, I have seen some. In some ways, the women's games are more interesting than the men's.

The NBA does subsidize the WNBA. But their attendance numbers are going up.

I don't watch b-ball on my own, but visiting friends, I've seen a few WNBA games, and I have to say I prefer it over NBA stuff, 99% of the time.

In all honesty, she did engage in illegal behavior - illegal both here (federally) and in Russia. How does DHS deal with small quantities of marijuana smuggled into the country? A smile and a slap on the wrist? Probably not. It does not help Biden's credibility to claim "wrongful detention."

On the other hand, is the sentence ridiculously severe? It is, in our eyes at least (I have no idea where it sits in Russian law, or how it compares to similar cases there). And yes, she will be the pawn in the political games.

Agreed.

At one point, I'd have had no sympathy for someone caught with illegal drugs in a foreign country.

Over the years, that's changed somewhat.

I don't know if our prisons are any 'better'; they certainly lack in rehabilitation structure.

But at least she could have family close by, speak the same language, and maybe be able to read the room as it were, far better than in a Russian or other foreign prison.

So, I do feel bas for her, even though it was her own actions that got her where she is.
