All 3 of those have vaccines available. 2 of them are widely available and generally required for attending public schools. People not getting vaccinated have caused them to continue spreading and mutating.

I hate to be the cynic, but it is likely that increasing trouble from climate effects along with worsening public health and more difficult pandemics are on the way. The perfect storm of how to ruin an ecosystem and drive extinction are on display.

Which ones? AFAIK my kids were vaccinated agains Chickenpox, but I don't think they are vaccinated agains Monkeypox. I need to call the pediatrician and ask. Also I think they stopped vaccinating against Polio once the diseases has been eradicated. My kids are up to date, so again I need to check with the doctor if they were give the Polio vaccine. I just don't recall it being offered.

We all have 3 Pfizer shots. I plan to get #4 before school starts.

Odds are it's MERS.

Or a return of swine flu. (Which is a variant of the original 1918 Spanish flu, so is that really new?)

Polio vax course (4 shots in series, IIRC) is still recommend for kids in the US. Schools may or may not require it however.

Edit: In our neck of the woods, Polio is among the vaccines required to enter grammar school.

Smallpox vaccine protects you from monkeypox, but smallpox has not been on the required list for decades. My wife has the vaccination, but I do not.

I guess that big ugly scar I have on my arm might be a good thing then.
I am not sure how long the smallpox vaccine is supposed to be good for.
I know my late husband had been vaccinated against smallpox twice, but that may have been because he was traveling to an area that still had smallpox, so they required a booster. Not sure.

The inactivated virus is the polio vaccine given in this country. It's by injection. The oral vaccine is a weakened live virus that once in a great while can spread to an unvaccinated person and result in symptomatic disease. You should be able to get the polio shot for your kids if they haven't had it yet.

I seriously doubt that anybody but the seriously susceptible will be getting monkeypox vaccinations, and it should not be required for school children in general.

Chickenpox vaccination is really useful to make it less likely to get shingles later in life. You would very much prefer not to have this. Adults who haven't had shingles can get a vaccine against it, although I think it is mostly given to us older folks.

Most countries have no plans for wide spread Monkeypox vaccines. Following WHO guidelines.

I’ve been totally flexing my Gen X smallpox vax scar since this whole thing started. Read it and weep, Millennials!

It would be nice if more funds were available for public health and health literacy. I'd suggest reallocating monies currently dedicated to security theater for screenings and pre-travel vaccinations at airports; this might reduce international transmission.

....not sure how accurate but I read an article that said that though smallpox vaccines work for monkeypox.....there were cases where older folks who had that smallpox vaccine [ the one with the scar ].....still caught monkeypox....again not sure how accurate the article was...

I was surprised to hear several years ago that the smallpox vaccination I got in the 1950’s would have “worn off” and no longer protect me. Back then, we were all told that said vaccination would protect us for life. Now, the smallpox vaccine is NOT readily available so, booster shots don’t exist. WTF???

An attenuated version of the vaccinia virus was developed and released in the 1950s to lessen the side effects of the vaccination with it. My conjecture would be how strong and how long the immunization lasts may depend on which version of the smallpox vaccine was used years ago.

Apparently vaccinia is most closely related to the now extinct horse pox virus, not cowpox as is often taught. There has been over 200 years of developing it and growing it by various means to create the inoculant. Once they declared smallpox eradicated they have not been producing it as much or requiring vaccinations for it.
