Depends on the temperature of the cold water, the desired hot temperature and how quickly your gas or electric heating element can transfer that energy into the water.

direct or indirect?
Ours is indirect. After power off it takes about 15 mins to get shower hot.

Electric? Gas? BTU rating? Age?
I agree with 20 minute estimate without any other info. A 30 year old gas unit could lose a 20% of the heating efficiency from rust in the burner area, and lose another 25% from sand/dirt/scale buildup in water side of the tank.

I take a military shower, a light rinse to wet down, secure the water, soap and scrub, then stronger spray to rinse.
This stretches hot water quite a bit, when it's in short supply.
