Hitched up the and went into to town to Costco — no joy.

It time for a lens upgrade for my indoor and sunglasses, so I went to Costco to get my prescription filled.

So they said 'Our lab won't put prescription lenses in sunglasses'.

She went on to point out some sunglasses on display and said 'Our lab won't put lenses in those either'.

For my indoor glasses she said 'We can send these into our lab and see if they do the lenses'.

I said 'No thank you', and she asked if I had priced lenses elsewhere, and I explained why, given what she told me, it wouldn't make any difference.

She started with the spiel all over again, so I bailed.

Now it's back to Kaiser, who does do the lenses, since both came from there, but out of a several orders, they almost always make a mistake necessitating an additional visit.

Oh well, it's only time and money.

Tried Zennioptical.com? We've been using them for years. They used to have no customer service at all but it's been quite good for us recently. They sell sunglasses but you can also order a regular pair of glasses and have them tinted into sunglasses.

I’m reminded of my trip to Costco to get new tires. They refused to put the tires I had paid for on my car, because my wheels were not OEM.

Was she saying they wouldn’t make rx shades, or wouldn’t put rx sunglasses lens into your non-Costco frames? If it’s the former, she was misinformed/wrong. I buy mine there no issue, and indeed they advertise availability of rx shades. If it’s the latter, she’s probably right. It’s a liability thing. The lab “can” put new lenses in existing frames, but there’s a decent risk of breaking the frame. I’ve found Costco willing to replace lenses in frames they sell but have always been cautioned of the risk of break.

Yea Costco goes by the book and I mean by the book. If tires are over 5 years old, the tires are done. no repair nothing. Which is a safety issue. And if you drive just a little bit on a steel belted radial, and it leaves that mark or ring on the outside of tire, that tire is toast.

I am in same situation. Have Kaiser and Costco.

I believe I use Kaiser to get the prescription, and then take that to Costco to get the glasses.

And they are Blended Bifocals. No problem, with Costco glasses.

Seemed a little cheaper for me as well. I think I remember Kaiser prices shocked me.

I agree, just recently my wife got prescription sunglasses along with regular glasses (using their $40 off second pair deal), both were using newly purchased frames from them. No issue getting them done, and as you said they even advertise them in their coupon book.

This sounds more like a request to re-use existing frames.

Here in GA Kaiser outsources to independent boutique shops. I used them last year and in many ways was disappointed. Kaiser paid for the exam for glasses but I would have had to pay additional if I wanted my contact lense prescription updated. I just did glasses and I did like the doctor a lot. however, for someone used to buying at costco i found the frames prices outrageous. Cheap ones that I even remotely liked were $800. Kaiser only allows $500 which is way more than i would have needed at Costco. I told the sales rep I was paying no more out of pocket than I would have paid at Costco. He rewrote paperwork to bring my cost to $225.

Next time I'll just go to Costco since my contact lenses prescription is now long in the tooth. or eyeball.

I went down to the Costco drugstore
To get your sunglasses made
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And, man, did he look pretty fade

I LOL'ed when I saw the subject line: my wife is from Lancaster, PA, and the Costco there really does have a horse and buggy parking area:

When I needed prescription sunglasses I got them thru zenni and I’ve been very happy. I think they cost me $75.

Yes, I was getting my frames upgraded, not intending to buy new frames at Costco.

Since they came from Kaiser, that's where I'll go from here.

I thought about buying online, but as I'll be getting progressives again, I wasn't confident I'd get the IPD right or the location of the progressive zone.

Costco touted anti-glare coating on every lens and a 'larger progressive zone' (made me laugh) and a high index glass option.

I'll have to see what Kaiser says about that.

This was a really disappointing situation, as the lens change represents a noticeable improvement in both distance and reading vision.

The former seemed a bit off, and the latter obviously needed correction.

I'm going to keep that card in my vest pocket, just in case!

Another vote for Zenni. And I go to a neighborhood optical place if they need adjustments. They never turned me away because I didn't get them there.

The neighborhood optical shops I used to go to and would do adjustments for free are gone. They either closed down or were bought up by a Luxotica company or its one remaining large competitor. They will adjust glasses bought there.

There was another independent shop, one optician ran it until he decided to go work for a local medical group at an office 25 miles away and closed the business. He would cut lenses to fit existing frames, had the equipment in his shop.

We discovered that the Costco optical department will do "minor repairs" for free and the glasses don't need to be from them. When my wife was buying new glasses from them they replaced a screw in her old frames that had fallen out and was lost, they were being held together with a paper clip. The worker explained that they do minor repairs for free and this was considered a minor repair and he put in a new screw.

My boss lives in Lancaster. I was there last year visiting - didn't see this at Costco, but I definitely saw H&Bs elsewhere.
