Oh, man. I had such a crush on her when that first album came out. The station I worked at pretty much let us play whatever we wanted, and I found myself drawn to this cut written by Leslie Duncan. Haunting vocals, and ONJ's picture on the every album cover just floored me. Just found this clip on her singing (well, lip-syncing) it on French TV.

R.I.P. indeed.

It looks like she followed the Steve Jobs cancer treatment.

After her other hits – such as "Magic" — and other movies, such as Xanadu, Newton-John dropped out of the spotlight to raise her daughter, and promote causes such as environmentalism and breast cancer awareness, after she was diagnosed with the disease. She treated it, she said, with alternative therapies, medical marijuana, humor and optimism.

Excuse me, what ??

ONJ was diagnosed with breast cancer 25 years ago. She underwent chemo and the usual course of treatment and thought she had beaten the disease, but it returned and metasticized in other parts of her body.

Dedicating her life and fortune to helping other cancer patients, she founded a major cancer research institute in Australia.

That's NPR's fault, not Freeradical's. That definitely gives the wrong impression. Glad to see she did good work.

Sorry I disagree.

ONJ has been very open in the media about her cancer struggles , hoping to help and encourage pthers. That sentence at the end of her NPR obit could describe pretty much everyone I know who has died of cancer, in terms of what they did when they knew the end was near.

It has nothing to do with the full course of the illness, or the treatment choices people may have made.

RIP ONJ

San Antonio, TX (in the old city)

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater

Thanks. I remember you posting that. I loved it then and love it now.

I started that post about being reminded of why I had a crush on Olivia Newton-John when I was a kid when I found this video of "Magic": [www.youtube.com]

After another trip down the rabbit hole yet again, I stumbled on this special "Olivia!" that was on ABC in 1978. It's extraordinary because it's Olivia Newton-John, with Andy Gibb and ABBA.

(The opening song does nothing for me, but the rest is cool and I had no idea this existed.)
