buy or rent a reciprocating saw Date: August 08, 2022 05:14PM |
I need a reciprocating saw to install a new door and door jamb at my sister in laws place. Reciprocating saws seem like important tools to have for the few minutes you need them. Borrowing would be preferable but I'm not sure its possible.

Handy tool, but I had one push me off a ladder a while back when it (correction, I ) hit a knot.

Not everybody enjoys collecting tools. Likely able to buy one from Hazard Fraught for about what it would cost to rent.

An appropriate hand saw would get the job done (albeit slowly) and, cost MUCH less that any power saw. As already mentioned, a recip saw can be a VERY handy tool to have in one's arsenal but, if you're pretty sure you won't need it in the future, the go with your gut and don't buy one.
Or, you could buy the tool, do the job and then decide it's not exactly the tool you need and return it.

I would get a battery operated one from whatever brand all your other battery tools are. Milwaukee here.

While you're at it consider an oscillating tool, which can cut a lot of stuff with a small high speed serrated blade. I am just starting to learn how useful these are now that I discovered my son owns one.

A battery powered reciprocating saw is a great yard tool. For construction you will need a lot of batteries or really, a corded reciprocating saw. Check a pawn shop.

I have the oscillating tool already. It has proven valuable for adding ethernet jacks to walls.

Reading through this thread prompted me to check out HD to see what they have on sale. If you're in the Ryobi camp (as I am), this combo for $99 looks very tempting. Although frankly, I don't really need any more batteries. For that matter, I don't need a reciprocating saw (yet).

DeWALT is overkill for the homeowner. Definitely check out Ryobi. They make a tool for darn near anything you can think of, and having a set of interchangeable batteries is super convenient.
If you don't want to but into a battery system then just get a cheap corded saw from anywhere, it will be fine.
I disagree for power tools, especially battery ones. I have a mix of Ryobi and Milwaukee(Similar quality to DeWalt) and for anything that I use more than a few times a year or gets abused/heavy use I get Milwaukee.
My Ryobi List: Light duty Drill x2, Cordless FInishing nailer(This thing is awesome), 18V small utility fan, Impact Driver for bits, Hyrdrostatic sprayer, clip on fan, LED Light
My Milwaukee List: 18V 1/2" 500ft/lbs Impact Gun, 12V 3/8" Ratchet, 18V Sawzall, 18V Angle Grinder, 18V Hammer Drill

I'm a fan of Ryobi tools so I say buy. You can buy pruning blades for it and use it to prune trees.
$99 with 4.0Ah batteries and charger, a great deal.

I low balled an ebay seller who posted a pic of a clean looking
DEWALT 20V MAX* XR - snagged it for $100. Doesn't come with batteries but I already have two. I was a bit hesitant but I know ebay will have my back if there's a problem.
