I need a reciprocating saw to install a new door and door jamb at my sister in laws place. Reciprocating saws seem like important tools to have for the few minutes you need them. Borrowing would be preferable but I'm not sure its possible.

You asked at a place like this? Expect a lot of buy recommendations, and maybe some tips on deals available out there.

Very useful tool when any remodeling is forecast. Highly recommend to buy for handy homeowners.

With that and a Wonder Bar, you can rule the demolition universe.

Time to get on the reciprocating bandwagon! Throw a 12" blade on there and you can start taking down small trees too!

Handy tool, but I had one push me off a ladder a while back when it (correction, I ) hit a knot.

I've had a recip saw for over 30 years. Having a good one is indispensable as there's so much one can use it for. Especially with all the blade choices these days. Diablo makes an incredible blade for cutting cast iron. Nice smooth cut.

A great tool to have. If you don't want to invest in the battery/charger there are plug in ones for much less. If it is truly a one-time need, check for used ones or Harbor Freight

Maybe you could get someone to loan you the saw and then when that person needs something, you could....

If I were to buy one and not worry about the price (which, frankly, isn't that big of a deal) then I'd get this one - [www.amazon.com]

Not everybody enjoys collecting tools. Likely able to buy one from Hazard Fraught for about what it would cost to rent.

While you're at it consider an oscillating tool, which can cut a lot of stuff with a small high speed serrated blade. I am just starting to learn how useful these are now that I discovered my son owns one.

An appropriate hand saw would get the job done (albeit slowly) and, cost MUCH less that any power saw. As already mentioned, a recip saw can be a VERY handy tool to have in one's arsenal but, if you're pretty sure you won't need it in the future, the go with your gut and don't buy one.

Or, you could buy the tool, do the job and then decide it's not exactly the tool you need and return it. eye rolling smiley

I love my old Ryobi saw. Cuts up all the things. Once you buy one type of battery operated tool, you tend to keep buying the same maker so the batteries all fit.

Oscillating tool rocks!

A battery powered reciprocating saw is a great yard tool. For construction you will need a lot of batteries or really, a corded reciprocating saw. Check a pawn shop.

I voted RENT.

Reading through this thread prompted me to check out HD to see what they have on sale. If you're in the Ryobi camp (as I am), this combo for $99 looks very tempting. Although frankly, I don't really need any more batteries. For that matter, I don't need a reciprocating saw (yet). wink smiley

For occasional light to moderate use it is possible to pick up a very usable reciprocating saw from Harbor Freight (at times for $20). I've found mine, which gets light use, helpful. If you will be using it infrequently, the HF saw might be a viable option.

The DeWalt recip saw that takes FlexVolt batteries lasts a pretty long time. More than enough for demo work.

Buy. When you need one you need it NOW. Not in 3 hours or days. Don’t buy an expensive one. Ryobi will work just fine. You don’t need DeWalt.

DeWALT is overkill for the homeowner. Definitely check out Ryobi. They make a tool for darn near anything you can think of, and having a set of interchangeable batteries is super convenient.

If you don't want to but into a battery system then just get a cheap corded saw from anywhere, it will be fine.

Take a look on Craigslist or Martketplace. If you find one of interest, take a footlong 2x4, cut through it at least twice, if there is an issue it will likely show itself.

A new corded is going to be around $50 at Harbor Freight, $80 at HD or Lowes, used will be half those prices (at least around me). Often you will get a collection of blades with the used ones as well.

You can usually get a corded version at Harbor Freight for $29.99. I have one of those at a commercial property I own for reducing trash items into smaller trash items and it works fine for that purpose.

At home I have a corded DeWalt and a cordless Ryobi. Both picked up on sale rather than emergency last minute purpose...the Ryobi was $15 at a Habitat for Humanity store (I already have Ryobi tools/batteries).

As others have said, they're a handy item to have if you do your own home work/maintenance. A cordless saw with a pruning blade on it is a great landscaping tool.

I disagree for power tools, especially battery ones. I have a mix of Ryobi and Milwaukee(Similar quality to DeWalt) and for anything that I use more than a few times a year or gets abused/heavy use I get Milwaukee.

My Ryobi List: Light duty Drill x2, Cordless FInishing nailer(This thing is awesome), 18V small utility fan, Impact Driver for bits, Hyrdrostatic sprayer, clip on fan, LED Light

My Milwaukee List: 18V 1/2" 500ft/lbs Impact Gun, 12V 3/8" Ratchet, 18V Sawzall, 18V Angle Grinder, 18V Hammer Drill

I low balled an ebay seller who posted a pic of a clean looking
DEWALT 20V MAX* XR - snagged it for $100. Doesn't come with batteries but I already have two. I was a bit hesitant but I know ebay will have my back if there's a problem.
