First time I had Spam was in elementary school. I used to call them square hot dogs before i knew what it was. They must have just opened the can and sliced the chunk into long blocks. It was okay if it was burnt. Lots of sodium, of course. Probably paid a part in the issuers with my ticker in later years.

I have spam once in a while, its pretty good in a bbq, sliced, a lot of the fat drips off. I like to BbQ Sliced Pineapple and have a Spam & Pineapple Sandwich!

Contrary to popular legend, SPAM is 100% pork shoulder.... not "floor sweepings" like hot dogs.
For a first try, I'd strongly recommend the "lower sodium" SPAM... the regular stuff is WAY too salty for me (and I generally like things saltier than most of my friends).
Get a can of the "lower sodium" SPAM, open it, slice it about 3/16" thick, fry like bacon, serve either with eggs, or, on a couple pieces of toast as a SPAM sandwich.
It's also quite nice chunked up in Mac and Cheese.

Suggest going to Hawaii, where SPAM is revered as its State's canned treasure.
They know, and do, all things SPAM, plus that makes the trip deductible for health foods research; as a medical expense.

If you go to the SPAM Museum in Austin, MN (I've been twice) you can get every variety they currently produce worldwide, even the ones not made for the US market. Or you can grab a few of the funky varieties at the SPAM booth at the Minnesota State Fair (starts next week).

I have one of these beauties and it works like a charm. Fried slices on toast with ketchup and I'm in heaven.
