Pros: you make/receive calls without cell Signal; you can make/receive calls abroad without extra charges (it works for me on ATT and Xfinity)

Cons: may not always give you accurate location if you call 911. May cut out if you have bad WiFi or bad internet connection.

I turned it on and my side of a call became nearly unintelligible.

That's because of my poor throughput.

But if one has decent throughput it should help if the cellular signal is low, which I believe is its function.

One's ISP or use of a VPN could fail to give their location to 911 receivers.

Cell reception in the building where I work is atrocious. Wi-Fi Calling has been a life saver for me.

I put the iPhone in Airplane mode and I turned on only the WiFi. Then the icon shows XM-WiFi

I went to Sao Paolo a decade ago on a job just as my Vz was up and iPho 3G was in need of new.

Switched to T-Mo bought a HTC Sens and made WiFi calls back from Sao Paolo with no issue.
I think T-Mo and HTC were the early adopters.

I now have a cell spot in the house from T-Mo courtesy of being a long time biz user. Though could prolly send it back for just wifi.
Every now and then though, glad I have cell signal at home.

Very handy to have WiFi calling in many NYC building were I work that have so much steel in them.

We have no cell signal at the house - so wifi calling is a must.

I used to get that for about a year with Verizon. My impression is they know the closest tower is overloaded and are doing it to fit more users until they get a new tower/more bandwidth installed.

With AT&T, I believe you have to actually turn on International Calling in order to use your phone overseas. I was in Japan for 5 weeks earlier this year. Here's my take on AT&T's International Calling Plan:

It costs $10/day whether you make one call or a bunch of calls. If you don't make an overseas call on a particular day, they don't charge you. After 10 days (within a billing cycle), they don't charge any more. So there's a cap of $100 per cycle. This worked well for me because I was there over two cycles. The first 21 days cost $100, and the next 15 days cost $100. The best part was that work paid for it.

At first, I thought $10/day was kinda high, but it was great to have. I could call anyone, anywhere from wherever I was. Since I was there for work, I needed to be able to call back home, call co-workers who were in-country, and call places in Japan. I never had to worry if I was on wi-fi. Even though work paid for it, I've decided if I'm overseas again, $10/day is worth the peace of mind to be able to use my phone just as if I'm back home.

my experience with ATT PRE-PAID about 6 years ago was that I turned on airplane mode and switched on WiFi and I paid $0 extra to make or receive calls.

Same on Xfinity. I just went to Korea and Canada. No charges for me if I used WiFi.

I've used AT&T International Day Pass many times even with unlocked phones. I like the convenience of being able to use the phone just like at home like you said especially with SMS authentication when needed. Also great for Uber or any ride sharing app.
