T Mobile or Mint?
Posted by: Harbourmaster
Date: August 23, 2022 09:34AM
Getting ready to switch phone providers as ATT just won’t give me better pricing no matter what I do.

We have 3 lines one each for the wife and I and a third is a backup/home phone that sees almost zero use.
We don’t stream on our phones and our typical monthly usage is right around 2gb combined.

I have narrowed it down to T-Mo or Mint, and leaning towards Mint but having trouble making the choice.

Any comments on why I might prefer TMo over Mint?

Does anyone have a discount or referral code they could share?

Aloha, Ken

We switched from AT&T to T-Mobile at the SO's request (better deal on new iPhone for him, blah, blah, blah)

T-Mobile has been nothing but a headache and a half since. Once the phone is paid off we're gone per me. The local store was lied repeatedly about stuff and getting someone on the phone to actually fix the billing issue has been exhausting. And I still have $$ owed to me that I need to call again about. They refunded some but not all of the $ in question.

NEVER, EVER had a problem with AT&T before switching.

I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile 6 years ago and it has been wonderful. The all in, no extra charges are great, including the free Netflix. Online and phone customer support has always been very good, and gets great ratings. I used the T-Mobile chip on my cellular iPad for 18 months before I switched away from AT&T...and have never looked back.
If you travel internationally at all---T-Mobile is the bomb. Free data and text in 210+ countries.
I have recommended them to my two Apple user groups I work with. Of the 45+ people that have gone to T-Mobile, only 4 have had issues. Since I provide tech support for these groups, I hear all the good and the bad.
With new iPhones being announced on September 7th, you might wait to switch so you can get a significant discount on a new iPhone as a new customer.

we switched to TMo a decade ago from Vzn. There have been minor bumps, but overall they have been very good. Especially over seas and over 55.
We have no service at the house and they sent a cell spot foc. Plug that into FiOS and have 5 bars everywhere.
I've had a number of friends switch from T and Vz to TMo and they have all been happy. None had the home coverage issues that we have.
All travel for work alot.
There is no doubt they have some dummies at CS, but what company doesn't? Fortunately, they are one of the few companies whose CS I haven't had to deal with very much.
YMMD.
As with any CS, if the person on the line isn't up to their $15/hr job. I hang up and try again later. If all else fails, letters to the corp are acted on better. The squeaky wheel ...
My brother had Mint, for not very long. Mint uses TMo towers.
He switched to another Mint type. He prepays the year for $x.
He seldom uses the phone, mostly text.

20+ years with T-Mobile with no problems and excellent customer service (usually not going to stores, though). Do not know about Mint, one advantage that T-Mobile has over other providers is international coverage and rates. I had work-issued ATT phone for a while and the international costs were hundreds of dollars per trip, while my wife and kids would be using our family phones and have no charges whatsoever. If you are not traveling internationally, should not matter. I have also noticed that my personal phone seems to have 5G in more areas that the company-issued ATT one, both are iPhone 12 Pros.

But you should really hear from someone who has Mint. Those small providers sometimes can be a really good deal if they meet your needs service-wise.

I just switched to Mint yesterday, so I really can't report on it yet.

I switched from AT$T to T-mobile about a month ago. My only complaint is that I signed up to pay by credit card but apparently didn’t sign up for autopay so T nicked me an extra $20 for our four phone family. T’s phone choice was a half price iPhone 11 64GB model (about $10/month for 24 months). Two years ago AT$T gave me a $5 x 30 months deal on three iPhone 11 256GB models.

Switched from vz to TMobile several hrs ago. Never looked back. The coverage was a little worse initially but if late TMobile seems to have good coverage. The price is great IMO.

I have to admit, being forced to switched to T-Mobile from Sprint has been a great. I got my bill reduced by half. Half.

I switched to Tmo 6 or 7 years ago. Prior, I was with VZW, Sprint and ATT. (I worked for all of the (Nextel, too).

I've been very pleased with Tmo. Nothing's perfect with any of them, but Tmo's service offerings, pricing and network are all top notch. If you don't need/want international, Mint may make sense. I've never looked at their plans, but since it's Tmo's network, service should be comparable.

I've been with T-Mo for ~ 8 years now. A couple of minor issues I was able to get resolved with a visit to a company retail location (something that CAN'T be done on Mint or other MVNOs). I can't remember NOT having at least decent service anywhere I've traveled.

LONG time T-Mobile user. Never deal with the stores, unless absolutely necessary. Have been completely fine with the service.

when I did go to the store, I made sure it was a corporate owned store, not a franchise. Fairly together for $15/hr.

I've been on T-Mobile for a long time with only one issue, for whatever reason they tell me my 7th gen iPad cannot be used on my 4th, now dormant, line. Agree about using only their corporate stores bur even they couldn't help, maybe I gave up to easily and need a return trip.

Have you looked at Cricket? It is owned by AT&T - so uses their network.

I am on the 4 for $100 unlimited plan (and two of use a boatload of data). They have less data options, but they cost more.

I'm mulling the exact same choice, but have yet to check T-Mobile's rates.

I have to cancel the free 250mb/month deal I've had for years, and only used to check T-M coverage at different locations.

I tried to get some device from them but couldn't because I was already customer.

There may be a period before I'm considered a new customer, for any deals.

But T-Mobile gives my five bars at home, which is huge for me, and also at a friends house where his VWZ gives him one bar, for a patch on his front lawn, depending on wind direction.

Mint is pretty cheap compared to my legacy att plan, but I don't know how T-Mobile compares to my att plan.

I don't need unlimited wireless data, but using my 'Phone occasionally as a hotspot for a 'Book or iPad would be handy.

Somebody should make an app one could launch and show a digital readout of cellular data being used when one the phone or hotspotting.

Looking it up online in one's account is after the fact and apparently not all that accurate between the time one checks and the time one is billed.

Just put the SIM in it--it should work.....except for phone calls.
