Anyone use an orthopedic pillow for neck support?
Posted by: rgG

I am having to adapt to sleeping on my back after being a tummy sleeper. It is a difficult transition.
I have been trying to figure out a good way to position a regular pillow but so far I am not doing that well.
My PT person says I need to keep my head straight and not twisted to one side or the other.
I was browsing Amazon and some other places and it looks like there are some “orthopedic”pillows with a dished out area in the middle that look like they might work.
Has anyone else with neck/back issues had good luck with any of these speciality pillows?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I think my PT lady could crack walnuts with her bare hands, lol. I told her she has hands of steel and that I might start calling her Wolverine. grinning smiley

Sorry, can't help. But I'm a stomach sleeper too, and even major abdominal surgery couldn't get me to switch. I slept on my back in the hospital, but I was pumped full of pain meds and could have fallen asleep in any position. But as soon as I was home, I just couldn't do it.

The weird thing is that I nap frequently and I can ONLY nap on my back, in a reclined position. If I try to lie down to nap, I can't fall asleep. At night, it's the opposite. No matter what, I can't fall asleep reclined or on my back.

I hate to say it, but my osteopath recommended the "Pillow Guy" pillow to help me get rid of my headaches, and it works amazingly well. The trick is to sort of grind/punch a depression for your head to rest in just before your lie down on it.

I got mine an Amazon-Bezos may be a greedhead, but I'd rather some of the money go to him rather than the Pillow Guy.

Maybe a pillow with a small "neck roll" at the shoulder edge of the pillow will support your neck in lieu of a scooped out center of the pillow (so you don't suffocate if you end up on your side).

I profess to being a side sleeper almost exclusively. I did back sleep while recovering from broken femur…

Stomach sleeping seems smiley-shocked003, but that is just me.

Best wishes you find something that really works for you, rgG, a good night's sleep is priceless.

I was rear ended a long time ago and wound up with some severe neck injuries that still persist. I was unable to get any decent sleep until PT recommended a tempurpedic pillow. I’ve been sleeping on one ever since and even take it when we go on vacation. I can’t sleep on any other pillow. Looks like they have sales going on now:

Wow, sleeping on my back would be a huge problem for me, but if it was mandatory, I guess I could do it.

I can sleep on my stomach for a short while, but 99% of the time, I'm a side sleeper.

Either one is fine.

I've been thinking about looking for a pillow to support my neck when on my side.

Some pillows have too much loft which might be fine for a back sleeper, but then the ends of the pillow rise up and conspire to smother me.

I'll watch this space, maybe what works for rg will also work for me.

I have pillow that is similar to one of those, I think mine came from Costco, so I have pounded out a dish in the middle and will see how that works later tonight.

I will also take a look at those tempurpedic pillows, too.

I have sleep and neck issues as well, and I’ve tried many different types of pillows. After years of searching I found the “D” cervical pillows the best. I swear it (mostly) restored the curve in my neck. The memory foam ones, the curvy ones, none of those were comfy over the long term.
Here’s the latest one I got… Core Products D-Core Cervical Support Pillow, Standard Firm, Midsize [a.co]
Good luck and I hope you find something that helps.

I use a Tempur Pedic that is thicker at the neck. It's probably not that good for me because I use it on top of another pillow and my head is already too far forward on my body. But it feels good. Roughly like this: [www.tempurpedic.com]

That cervical pillow looks interesting. I need to show that to my PT lady and see what she thinks.
I used to have one of those shaped tempurpedic pillows, a long time ago, but I could never get used to it, and went back to tummy sleeping.

I’m currently using one of the Avacado brand memory foam pillows and I like it quite a bit. Very moldable.

^ Similar to you, I have a bamboo memory foam pillow that is good for side sleeping or back sleeping. It's the perfect density. It's the Cariloha Air.

I do the same thing. I need a thin pillow underneath it to be comfortable. I’ve been using this combination for over 25 years and sleep good with it.
