.....allegedly.....

Netflix Plans to Charge $7 to $9 for Ad-Supported Plan

....Netflix is planning to charge between $7 and $9 for its upcoming ad-supported tier, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Netflix's current lowest-priced plan is $9.99 per month in the United States, with the plan offering 480p streaming.

Netflix also has a $15.49 per month plan for 1080p streaming, and a $19.99 per month plan for 4K streaming. The lower-cost ad-supported tier is aimed at those who don't mind ads and who do not want to pay $9.99+ for a standard Netflix subscription.

Ads will be shown before and during TV shows and movies, and Netflix plans to sell approximately four minutes of advertising per hour, which will be shorter than the 10 to 20 minutes of commercials per hour shown by cable companies. Customers will not be able to skip ads or access playback controls while ads are playing, but Netflix does want to limit ad targeting and make sure ads are not too repetitive.

The ad-supported tier will have more restrictions than more expensive tiers, and Netflix does not plan to allow customers subscribed to the plan to download TV shows and movies for offline viewing.

Netflix has turned to ads because it has not been able to maintain subscriber count. The company lost subscribers for the first time in 10 years in the first quarter of 2022, and blamed "a large number of households sharing accounts" and "competition."

Netflix is aiming to introduce the more affordable plan in limited markets before the end of the year, but a full rollout may not happen until 2023.

Four minutes of ads could be 30 seconds at the start and then three interruptions through the show. I can deal with ads at the start of the program, but not during the middle of a show.

I find myself watching Disney+ and Prime more anyway, followed by HBO, then Netflix. It may just be time to drop it, maybe try Apple instead (I'd drop HBO too but the wife likes it).

Netflix was on my budget slim down drop list. This might get them a reprieve.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

We're getting Netflix for free from T-Mobile. I imagine it will go to the ad version and so I'll have to decide whether to add a few $ to get ad free. I watch Hulu with ads, but I'm only paying $.99 a month and there's a limited number of shows we watch on Hulu.

Yea, I don't know if Peacock still does it, but when it first came out and we watched one of the Psych movies, all the ads were upfront. I liked that.

Problem with a lot of streaming programs is that they weren't edited with ads in mind, so the ads can be inserted in weird places, so you have to wonder if anyone is going to take that into consideration, or will there just be ads at 10 minutes and 20 minutes, etc. which can be really disrupting when it's in the middle of a scene. When you watch a show that was originally on broadcast/cable, will the ads correspond to the built-in ad breaks, or will they again be at 10/20 minutes?

The other thing is that they are always the SAME. I hate ads, but at least on "normal" TV there is a variety. When streaming services add ads, they are always the same 3-5 ads throughout.
