Do you use cruise control?

I spend some time driving through mountains and I was entertained to see passenger cars dropping below the speed limit on inclines.

All the time, best way to make sure you don't speed accidentally. Never on side streets though, only main roads that don't have a lot of lights and highway/freeway/interstates.

Only on highways... because I keep forgetting that my car supports cruise at low-speeds.

Primarily on city streets (30 MPH limit) so that I don’t have to monitor my speed continuously. But I have adaptive cruise and it slows/brakes far too often when it isn’t necessary.

Out on the interstate or other higher speed roads I’ll set the cruise for the speed limit and modulate with my foot. If I see a suspected LEO I’ll lift off the accelerator and the cruise will see that I don’t slow lower than the limit.

Driving through Burbank headed to Pasadena on the 134 and pacing most midday traffic I checked and was doing 80. Cruise control @ speed limit would have me blocking traffic.

Never on surface streets, it's to impractical.

Sometimes on highways, it gives my foot a break.

Otherwise, I'm very good at pacing.

Adaptive cruise control on my Subaru works really well. Didn’t use cruise control very often, prior to owning this car.

I had adaptive cruise on a car in thr past and loved it. It's sort of a necessity I'd say, for long trips. I don't like regular cruise nearly as much but have used it extensively on highway trips; set it for 68mph and forget about it.

I use the adaptive cruise control on the highway and love it.

I also use it in a single subdivision on the way to our kid's house that has a 20 mph speed limit on a wide, straight road and cops who seem to delight in pulling over out-of-state drivers who are speeding.

Whenever practical on interstates and the like, but barely on surface streets here as the constant hills, curves, and random intersections in PA make it impractical on most roads other than limited access highways.

I don't have adaptive control yet, but I drove a rental for a week with it, and I liked it. Keeps you from running up the backside of someone going just slower than you. I encounter that a lot on our busy but not usually choked PA Turnpike.

I got popped in rural Ohio and in rural western Colorado. The only two tickets I have ever gotten, thus far at least.

On our Subie the adaptive cruise control works well, except that you only can go up or down in 5mph increments. Also...I find that if I get inattentive I will find myself just cruising along at 48 mph behind some big rig instead of 65, forgetting that the car automatically slowed.

Bolt EV, cruise control is ridiculously easy to set and modulate in 1mph increments so I use it frequently. It really helps me stay at 28 mph in some longer 25mph sections around town. Not adaptive in my model year so I do have to pay attention. Using cruise a lot makes it easy to achieve higher m/kwh.

Primarily on highway trips. If I don't, I find myself fairly fatigued after awhile. Of course under some traffic conditions it's not feasible to use the cruise control. I rarely use it for local trips, particularly in residential areas or downtown. Too many stoplights, stop signs, pedestrians, animals and turning corners.

Absolutely. Bought my Cadillac CT5-V with this specifically for long trip and it works fantastic.

You are so not the only one. Cruise Control is a godsend though I suppose tossing one's cookies could be a weight loss strategy...

I use it less with vehicles that try to be smart. Eg, if it does braking, I'll probably not use it. I get tired of going down hills only to have the car brake rather than carry the momentum up the next hill.

Nope. It's in Birmingham, Alabama.

I was driving the interstate in my pre-cruise control Opel station wagon and the friends in the car behind me said they could tell when i was talking because I slowed down. When my friend was talking we'd speed up.

In an incidentally related story: my sister and my parents drove from Wisconsin to Texas to visit me at my first Air Force assignment at Kelly AFB near San Antonio. Driving through OK, the cops saw the out of state license and decided to capitalize, pulling my sister over for speeding. They were in Dad's Buick LaSaber which did not have cruise control but it DID have a stick over the speedometer that you set that would sound an alarm if you drove faster than the setting. jeannie showed the officer that it was set at the speed limit and noted that there was no alarm, so it was unlikely that she was speeding. He was really disappointed but she was on notice about OK tricks.

I never used it until my current vehicle which has adaptive cruise control. Previously, I disliked having to worry about braking or cutting it manually when traffic slowed. But with adaptive cc, I use it the majority of the time on expressways. Nudging my desired speed up and down with the steering wheel controls has become second nature.

I also find myself using it locally in speed trap areas or on curvy rural roads where your speed can fluctuate up or down more than intended.

THIS is probably the biggest reason I don't use cruise control very much.

I hate giving up that momentum and wasting fuel.

Tapping the brakes now and then keeps me from encroaching on traffic ahead of me, and still close to the speed limit.

I've always thought there should be an option of 'one-way' cruise control — it would accelerate one to the preselected speed, but never apply brakes.

I have a throttle lock on my bike that works similarly.

For those who don't know, a throttle lock differs from an actual cruise control in that the former mechanically locks the right grip (twist throttle) in one place.

True cruise controls are reserved for pricey touring bikes or expensive third-party add-ons.

With a lock, output from fuel injection or carbs remains constant regardless of road grade or wind, so speed will often fluctuate.

Applying brakes will generally overcome it but not disengage it, but for most people using for the front brake lever will roll off the throttle slightly.

Properly adjusted lock tension will just overcome the throttle return spring and keep the grip in the desired space but allow for easy twisting to 0 should one not unlock before slowing or braking.

Still, on long trips on level roads, they give the hand a rest.

My throttle lock applies resistance to the throttle twisting shut, but not to rolling it on.

So when going up a grade, overcoming a headwind, or passing a vehicle, I can just relax my grip and the throttle returns to the previously set position, and pretty much the same, or the same speed.

I find that very convenient.

If my car's cruise control had that option, I'd definitely use it more (but still not a lot).

I play gigs until late and by the time we load out, it's really late, and the cops will pull you over for 1mph over, so on long streets I set the cruise to make sure I don't give them any cause. I've been stopped twice, but they are just checking for drunks, so no ticket. Rather not get pulled over at all though, so it's helpful. No one on the road, so I can just let it go until I have to turn, etc.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who uses it in town though!

So, you enjoy rolling right into a speed trap? Based on my radar detector, that's where they are.

My current car doesn't have it, but I have used it in the past only for highway driving. Recently rented a Toyota with steering assist. I almost had a heart attack when I fired up the cruise control and it felt like the steering wheel was fighting me.
