I'm finally thinking it's time to dive into the M-processor Macs.

Most of my work is done with my current 15" MBP hooked up to a OWC Thunderbolt Dock, so typically I only have the single USB-C cable attached.

I was looking at the 13 inch MBA v MBP. Both are the same M2, 8 core CPU, 10 cor GPU. I'd be getting 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB drive, and both are $1899. The keyboard for the MBP has the older style (like my current MBP), and the MBA uses MagSafe3.

Anything else I'm missing? Seems like they are overlapping models.

MBP has a fan and will run faster for longer as a result.

MBA is totally missing any type of heat sink and will slow down under a heavy, continuous load. You can alleviate this a little bit by removing the bottom cover and putting some thermal pads in (which is actually pretty easy to do).

But, for the MBA, realistically, it's probably only a problem if you're doing heavy video/graphics/sound work. If it's just an everyday, web/email/office tasks computer, it would be fine.

You can also alleviate it somewhat on a cooling pad, but for most users the heating issue is not a real issue.

The touch bar would make the MBP a non-starter for me.

no quad firing speakers, just stereo speakers even though it still supports Spatial Audio.
no MagSafe charging port so one less Thunderbolt port when charging
no dual USB-C charging adapter (only with higher model)
no fast charging, even though it comes with 67W USB-C adapter, fast charge is not a feature on the MacBook Pro 13 M2
no slim and lightweight design
no fancy colour options, just the standard silver or space grey.
So what will it be? Stick to the old MacBook Pro 13 design with Apple M2 chip OR go with the new MacBook Air M2. Tell us what you think. “

It will be used mostly in clamshell mode placed vertically, so it will have good circulation. The heaviest lifting I do is running Windows in Parallels (yes, I know, issues with the M chips and Parallels-- it's only 2 apps that I need to run, so I need to test them at some point!).

I'm trying to decide between the M2 Air and the M1 Pro 14" MacBook Pro. The 13" MPB isn't in my sights at all.

The thing is, I don't need either. I have an M1 Air and it's a fine machine--seriously, the most impressed I have ever been by a computer--but I'm having a small amount of buyer's remorse because I got 8GB RAM instead of 16GB. I don't think I'm experiencing any memory pressure, but still wish I'd gotten the 16GB so I wouldn't even have to think about it.

Spend another $200 for the 14" MBP with the same specs or $1600 for the 14" with only 512GB SSD.
