It’s back in the box in the garage, I’m on the couch with a few Tylenol working on the migraine and a couple of shots of Albuterol in my asthmatic lungs. I’m expecting a return label shortly after a chat with a very helpful gentleman. Whose first recommendation was definitely shut it off and get it out of my home. I appreciate that …

Hmmm... Gotta admit, I'm a bit surprised since in general, Wyze products have been pretty good for the price. However, an air purifier shouldn't smell like that. Not at all. I'd've returned it immediately as well.

What are the dimensions of the room you into which you planned to place the Wyze Air Purifier? Maybe we can guide you towards a suitable model from one of the better manufacturers, i.e. BlueAir, Winix, etc.

We've had one of these running in our Den for years 24/7/365 on low and we're happy with it. I know it's not a large area device but does a good job, our Den is about 300sq.ft.

Ok, maybe Wyze rushed the to market, and production or material differs from the previous run.

So I'll wait and see.


In the meantime, though for a very small space at 140sq.ft, that Hamilton Beach seams like it's worth at try at $45!

It has an almost tiny footprint, which I like.

Still smallish for the bedroom, but that probably just means longer intervals between room air changes.

And — it's on sale.

Isn't it the case that Apple has used 100% contract manufacturers for several decades.

My guess is that Apple has more contract clout and quality control with vendors than does Wyze.

Most of the ratings listed in ads and product descriptions for air purifiers overstate the capabilities the unit. Meaning, it isn’t capable enough for the space that they’re gearing it towards.

Hate to say, based on the specs of the Hamilton-Beach air purifier, it's not worth a purchase. The airu purifier is not a true HEPA model and it's also designed for a space that is 140 sq ft or smaller. That spec is always based on using it on its highest, nosiest speed. Assuming the machine actually cleans the air, it is likely good for a space the size of an office cubicle. That Grateful is using it in a space that is more than twice the size of its rated specs means it's probably not doing much at all to clean it. I wouldn't go near it.


FWIW, an appropriate model for the room mentioned in Grateful's post is along these lines:

5 air changes per hour based on 360 sq feet and that's based on its highest, nosiest speed. That's what I would considered the minimum for a 300 sq foot space. I'd want a more capable model, which can produce a similar or better number of air changes per hour at a lower, quieter speed.
