....urges all to get vaccinated......as found in sewage system, it seems to be spreading more.....

NY Declares Polio Emergency as Another County Finds Virus in Wastewater

A Rockland County man has a paralytic polio infection, and wastewater samples confirm community spread in multiple other counties going back to April and continuing through this month

....New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Friday as yet another county announced detection of the virus in wastewater samples, a sign the outbreak continues to spread throughout the Empire State.

The governor's declaration came the same day local authorities on Long Island said recent testing of wastewater in Nassau County turned up positive traces of the polio virus. That county joins Rockland, Orange and Sullivan in detecting the virus in sewage samples.

Broadening the state's vaccination efforts is a cornerstone of the emergency order. The declaration expands vaccine administrators to include pharmacists, midwives and EMS workers, Hochul's press release said. The order also requires healthcare providers to pass along immunization data to aid the health department's oversight.

“On polio, we simply cannot roll the dice,” State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett said Friday. “If you or your child are unvaccinated or not up to date with vaccinations, the risk of paralytic disease is real."

The Nassau County executive planned to hold a briefing Friday afternoon following the recent testing of wastewater that turned up positive traces of the polio virus.

It's the latest county to detect polio since the state Health Department confirmed four samples from Sullivan County, two from July and two from August, tested positive for the type of virus that can cause paralytic polio.

So far the state only has one confirmed case of a paralyzing polio infection, from Rockland County. But related viral samples have turned up in wastewater from Orange County and New York City as well. Retroactive testing of samples confirmed the virus was circulating in the community as far back as April, well before the young, unvaccinated Rockland man was infected.

“The polio in New York today is an imminent threat to all adults and children who are unvaccinated or not up to date with their polio immunizations," Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said in a statement.

I don't know if I am vaccinated, as I grew up abroad and emigrated to the US in mid 90s as an adult.
I hope my kids are vaccinated, they are born in mid to late 2000s. I need to call the pediatrician to make sure.

I think I will call my doctor to ask if I can get vaccinated and what happens if I am vaccinated and I get the shot(s) again.

BTW, is it a single shot or a series of shots?

......

.....The inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), the only vaccine available in the United States, is safe, and contains no live virus. It protects 99 – 100 percent of people who get all recommended doses. In accordance with CDC, the polio immunization schedule by age is as follows:

All children should get 4 doses of the polio vaccine. The first dose should be given at 6 weeks through 2 months of age, followed by one dose given at 4 months of age, 6 through 18 months old, and 4 through 6 years old.

People starting the polio immunization series after 4 years of age who are unvaccinated or are unsure if they have been immunized should receive a total of 3 doses.

Adults who have only had 1 or 2 doses of the polio vaccine in the past should get the remaining 1 or 2 doses – it does not matter how long it has been since the earlier doses.

In addition, adults who live or work in the areas where poliovirus has been detected (Rockland County, Orange County, New York City, Sullivan County, and Nassau County) and don't believe they are vaccinated should get vaccinated.......

Those of us who are old enough remember the absolute terror polio held back in the day before vaccination. Since most children now are vaccinated, the "herd" immunity is pretty high, but I'd still want to be vaccinated if I didn't know if I ever was

A friend of mine who was 87 years old contracted polio in the 1930’s. He spent YEARS in a Children’s Polio Ward in St Charles Hospital on Long Island, NY. He spent the rest of his life on crutches but made his own way through life. He died this past February in hospital. He told me that in the last few DECADES of his life, doctors he saw (for other reasons) were CLUELESS about polio as none of them had ever met a polio patient. From what I’ve read recently, public health officials became aware of the rising cases of polio by monitoring the waste water treatment. With SO many people shunning vaccinations (for whatever reasons) diseases that have been “conquered” DECADES ago are making a comeback.

Post-polio syndrome in middle age is also often h*** for those who contracted it in childhood.

I recall standing in line in 1st grade to get my sugar cube with the Sabin vaccine. I had been given the Salk vaccine sometime before. Almost no one in my age group came down with the disease, and the city I grew up in closed its separate children's infirmary in the mid-'60s. But I knew a few older kids who had had it. One joined my 6th grade class a year behind, his twin sister was in the 7th grade. He lost a year getting a kidney transplant, his kidneys had been damaged earlier when he had polio and failed a couple years earlier.

I recall the fear. My east coast city closed it's only muni swimming pool and the local wading pool became the source of rumors about how it could spread polio so was avoided like the plague.

The sense of relief that swept through adults when the Salk vaccine became available was so intense it transmitted down to the youngest of us kids but mostly we just wanted our pool back.
