Already done: grapefruit, because, well, I love grapefruit. grinning smiley

Edit: mine is a baby, won't be many years until it bears fruit, but it has already flowered... and the blooms, wow, I wasn't expecting that. Their scent is pure heaven. I see I'm not the only one who's noticed that: [flowersandmusings.blogspot.com]

Depends on the space and location. Should check the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map too. Some tree roots can damage sidewalks, etc.

I've reached my limits for large trees. I have about 16 Redwoods - some are about 25+ feet and and will continue to grow.

I planted some Monterey Cypress trees that grew really fast and large. Next year will require trimming or removal as they grow into electric power lines.

Japaneses Maples if it's not too windy. There are all kinds of varieties, small and large. They loose their leaves in winter.

I'm looking for some smaller evergreen varieties (6-8') that can fill in some empty spaces.

How long will you live there?

I favor eastern hardwoods. Oaks in particular have incredible habitat value. They will get large, but you have a good fifty years before they present a problem, probably for the next owner.

Orange Trees. I love oranges.

I'd love to plant Oranges, Lemons and the like and see what happens!

A neighbor down the street had one. In the spring he'd bag them up and give them away.
The freeze of 2021 killed it.

My uncle has a grapefruit tree. My wife & daughter love them.

We moved house almost forty years ago in about February time. The garden had been left wild for several years before but there was this tall tree rising out of the jungle. As Spring arrived these amazing leaves developed which I had never seen before but my f-i-l recognised it and said we were very lucky to have a mature Ginkgo Biloba. We have grown one in every garden since although they are not so tall as our original yet.

I think those are interesting too. IIRC, an ancient tree, only one species/variety.

But (again, IIRC) I’ve heard they grow slooowwly. And smell bad.

Sugar Maple. Large, sturdy, long lived with a wonderful shade canopy and the best fall color. We have one next to our house that is probably 100 years old and I wouldn't trade it.

This is my dream tree, and the reason for the question. I'm trying to be realistic, but there's some amountof pure whimsy associated with those huge trees that the planter will never realize.

There are so many different colors and forms, there is sure to be one that works for most areas.

They come in male or female. The females produce a very smelly fruit, you want to avoid those. The males produce no oder. Make sure your nursery knows which is which.

Years ago, I might have answered a black walnut, mostly for its beautiful wood. But lately, volunteers have been popping up in our yard - I think either they have expanded their range, or we’ve gotten a bit warmer.

London plane trees are also cool, with their unique bark. But if I had to choose today, maybe a sequoia.

My city planted a whole main drag of these (females). Wow. It's difficult to walk that stretch in spring.

As much as I would like an avocado tree, they won't make it at this elevation. So my choice is the Quaking Aspen. You only need to get a few established and then they do spread like weeds if you let them. We planted six in our yard initially and now have about 20, after losing 8 to an early snowstorm last October.

They have beautiful green quaking leaves in the spring and summer, gorgeous fall colors and beautiful bark in the winter. They are also pretty fire resistant so the fire marshall is less worried about having them closer to the house.

That said we keep ours at the edge of the property as they can cause problems with plumbing, foundations and sidewalk. I saw a photo a friend took of an Aspen attempting to sprout through his slab foundation when he was replacing the carpet in his house.

I have heard suggestions that a huge forest of Quaking Aspen in the White Mountains of Colorado is one singular organism, all connected to one mother tree. Some even call it the largest living single organism.

We planted a loquat at our old house. We actually planted 3 but one survived to maturity.
Atlanta is a little too far north for loquats, so we never got any fruit, but the leaves were really cool and we were the only people around that had one.

For those who haven't experienced them first-hand, Ginkgo fruit look like bright yellow-orange olives. They don't smell much at all as long as the skin of the fruit is unbroken, but the flesh inside has a smell reminiscent of very strong artisanal cheese (a sulfur compound, I'd assume) and it is a powerful smell.

We planted a weeping Japanese Maple 20 years ago. It’s only about 8’ high, and very pretty. We keep it trimmed. The Crimson King maple that went in the same year is 50’ tall and gorgeous when the leaves go deep red.

As much as I'd like to re-populate the Chestnut, and the Ash... for my precious little back yard, I'm going to have to go with a Fig tree.
I only discovered the pleasures of fresh figs a few years ago, and I'm addicted! Unfortunately, like so many hard-core addictions, I can't afford fresh figs at something like $12 a pound.
A coworker has a fig tree, and in-season, brings me part of her harvest which hardly ever last long enough to get home.

I haven't figured out what variety of Fig would grow best in our weird coastal micro-zone, but, once I learn enough to select a varietal, I've got two spots picked out for a couple fig trees.

I recall a wedding in the bay area where one of the appetizers were just trays of fresh figs. Heaven. Cali is the place for that.

Get a Brown Turkey Fig. We had a big one at our other house. It preformed much better than the other two varieties I planted. They produce a good crop of figs, but unless you cover with bird netting, the birdies will eat or partially eat more than their share.

You'd love my fig tree. They can get unwieldily if you let 'em. Black Mission Figs grow "supposedly" in USDA Zone 9 and up.

My difficulty is with cool, cloudy, summers (70 degrees is a hot day), and relatively wet summer and fall... Neither condition are typically perfect for figs (according to what I've read...).
Some varieties are better with cool, cloudy, summers than others. I just need to learn which varieties get along nice with less sun, and more damp, drippy, mornings.

My granny had a fig tree. when she babysat/put grandchildren to work in her garden, we would love to climba and grab and eat fresh figs right off the tree!

We have two ginkos in the neighborhood, a female and a male. The fruit of the female remind me of persimmon, but as noted biting into one is a one trial learning opportunity. Do it once and you'll never do it again. The owner of that property puts a net down in the fall so that they can be easily collected. The male is in the alley behind our house and while the fall leaves are pretty with their yellow color they are large requiring some effort in the fall (I wish that owner would make the effort!)

Several oaks in the neighborhood and they require cleaning up dropped branches after wind events. Well, lots of trees require cleanup, but oaks are notable for the limbs and deadwood after a storm.

I have discovered that the way to get acorns to sprout and grow is to leave the flower bed alone for a year or two. LOTS of sprouting oaks in my flower beds.

Japanese (?) Cherry Tree - beautiiful aroma in full spring flower at the new/older family home which I still recall. Also attracted scores of birds dining on the fruit. Stubborn father insisted on taking it down - "Need a GARAGE!" (almost sinful!).

Sugar Maple - Another stunner but in the fall. Planted a couple in Chicago at the family home after seeing them at the Morton Arboretum in the fall, but the squirrels "girdled" it's sweet bark and killed them. Wasn't aware of how destructive they could be.

Tree whose name I CAN'T recall now. Saw the latter in a landscaper's back yard in FL on a misty-rainy day late in the afternoon some forty years ago! Owner not around so I couldn't inquire about it. Later found it online. Incredibly beautiful - scores of medium-sized pink buds! Stunning beauty! Name, name name!!!!

Anyone ever see one of the incredibly long-lived trees (2K yrs) whose name I can't recall now again? The pine needles are long and beautiful and they're stately when YOUNG!!

Not enough information provided to give an intelligent answer. When I owned a house, the local County Extension was a wealth of knowledge about such things. A CE employee actually came to my property for a free evaluation! If there's no such service where you are, I'd recommend consulting with a local CERTIFIED ARBORIST. Either way, they'll be familiar with YOUR local conditions. Things like susceptibility to bugs / diseases, typical weather conditions and much, much more come into play. This is something you want to "get right" the FIRST time. old fogey smiley

A Pear tree, or two.

My Uncle's farm had three pear trees on it. I have no idea what variety they were. The trees were loaded with fruit every year, but the pears themselves were small, rock-hard, and had almost no flavor. The cows loved them, though.

They also had a large number of apple trees, as near as I can tell of the Macintosh variety because they were small-ish, stayed green but developed a slight russet-colored blush on one side when ripe, and had firm flesh with a strong, tart, lightly sweet taste. They were great for cooking or for eating right off the tree, and my great aunt would get me to pick a basket of them for her to make apple jelly and apple sauce from. I would LOVE to have two or three of those trees in my yard.

They're a bit sweeter, and gamier, more delicate , and flavorful than plain ol' chicken....,
but I'm sure w/ a little practice you could get it to taste pretty darn close to chicken....
