I woke up to the sound of a crow fight

Around 6:45 AM I hear this weird noise outside, it sounded like a bunch of crows but once in a while a different sound could be heard. I got up and looked outside my window and I could see a bunch of crows flying into and out of a tree and a few branches were moving in that tree. After about 30 seconds or so most crows flew into a tree across the street and the fight and sounds continued there.

I have no idea what they were fighting, but I don't think it was other crows. Perhaps an owl or some other prey bird.

I wish I had a camera to film all this. I was intense.

Any chance it was some sort of mating activity? We've watched some interesting behavior with a group of male wild turkeys all chasing after as lone female. They'll fight each other for her attention and she seemed quite uninterested but threatened and was eventually chased to the roof of one of our parked cars trying to avoid them.

Whenever crows are screaming bloody murder where I live, either one is being chased by a hawk, or several of them are chasing a hawk.

This, or the other thing I've seen -- crows surrounding and killing one of their own. I've often wondered if it's not just a territoriality thing, but the crows sense that one of them is sick or something, and decide to kill it.

I walked around my property and I also looked at the neighbor's tree across the street and there are no feathers or any other sign that I can see.

Corvids fight around my bird feeder, but they don't go after their own species.

The crows will go after the jays, and they all will go after the cardinals (who are surprisingly good at chasing off larger birds).

In the West End of Vancouver, I usually assume crows are making a ruckus about one or more racoons.

How far off you sat and wondered?

Who, me? I was barely awake and inside, I guess the tree was around 70-100 feet away from the window .

Sorry, as an immigrant you were probably not weaned on American music of the 70s. It's a song reference.

Where I live (Puget Sound, WA) crows often band together and harass eagles, and they make quite a racket doing that.
