Gear heads… is it done ? 2008 Honda CRV rear suspension goes “CLUNK !”

I pulled the wheels. Oy.
Wheel bearings are leaking grease
Control arm bushings are worn and the bits flop around as a result. I think that’s the clunk.
One CV Axle looks like it’s lost all its grease, but is not “clunking “. Yet.
Tires are worn out.

I’m going to take it to my favorite shop, but I suspect Azul (it’s Glacier Blue) is a candidate for “sell to a kid who will work on it”.

Engine is strong, transmission is strong, AC works, etc.

Spend ten minutes browsing car prices and inventory, and then decide if you want to repair your beater.

How much work is that? Might not be as much as you suspect. Hopefully you have a trustworthy independent shop.

At current car prices, its probably worth fixing.

I know much of that can be addressed in a couple of hours including beer time.

But good tires don't come cheap. Oh, a good honda forum will give you a good idea of what to expect out of your vehicle moving forward.

That is exactly the age when everything starts to go on a Honda. Absolutely if you live in the rust belt. You'll likely have to replace all of the calipers pretty soon, along with a steering rack, and all shocks.

I'd ballpark $500 in parts to do yourself plus whatever the tires cost. Figure you are going to spend $1500 plus the tires if you take it to a shop. Do both CV axles, both wheel bearings, and both control arm bushings. I would also take a look at the calipers and the struts at the same time. The struts should be done at the same time as the above because you will need an alignment anyway with doing the CV axles and new tires. It could go up to $3000 total for a shop to do everything.

I have a 2006 Malibu that needs much of the same work that yours does but also leaks a small amount of coolant from an unfindable location. It is our second car and only drives around in town, less than 10 miles if driven at all per day, not more than 5 miles from home and we have AAA so I am comfortable with that. I'm not fixing it, just living with the problems and when it becomes undrivable it is done for.

Thanks for the advice. Calipers are newer already. Brakes work well.

Those are GREAT cars. How many miles on it? We bought a 2003 CRV for our daughter from friends who had taken good care of it from new. 170k miles and it drives like new. I'd love to find another one like it.

absolutely worth fixing...new axle (well, half-axle) for the CV boot issue.

new rear tailing arm bushing kit (both sides) is $70 off eBay.

wheel bearing units look to be under $150 each.

That sounds to me like routine maintenance and should not cause you to have any thoughts regarding replacing the vehicle (unless you don't like the vehicle for some reason).

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
