Primary features:

Coverage of the ultrawide-angle 17-mm to wide-angle 28-mm range of focal lengths makes this lens the perfect choice for a wide variety of scenes and subjects, including street photography, landscapes, and portraits.
The fast constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range allows for natural bokeh expression and reduces the effects of camera shake when shooting in low-light conditions.
The compact and lightweight design with a total length of approx. 101 mm and weight of approx. 450 g provides excellent portability.
Offers the shortest minimum focus distance*1 among full-frame/FX-format NIKKOR Z wide-angle zoom lenses — just 0.19 m, allowing users to get close to their subjects for dynamic expression.
Provides high-speed AF and supports smooth focusing, even when shooting moving subjects and video.
Equipped with a stepping motor (STM) for extremely quiet operation and fast response.
Incorporates a control ring, to which settings such as aperture and exposure compensation can be assigned — realizing quiet, smooth operation even during video recording.
Support for linear MF drive*2 enables smooth focusing.
Designed to suppress focus breathing so that changes in the angle of view when focus is adjusted are reduced.
The length of the lens barrel remains constant when zooming. This makes it easier to maintain balance during shooting, while also making the lens safer to carry.
Designed with consideration for dust- and drip-resistance*3, and an antifouling coating applied to the front-most lens element.

Nikon is learning that not even professionals are trying to mortgage the house to outfit the full breadth and range of a whole new lens mount.

Looks like a great option, I just wish it wasn't more expensive than the Tamron branded lens. It's the same glass. I guess the Nikon name and associated support are worth an upcharge, but $200 seems steep.

I do look forward to the upcoming rebrand of the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8. That is a sweet lens, and not too big.

Debbie Downer here, but I'm not impressed with the zoom range. It's less than 2-to-1. More like 1.7:1. If not 16-35, it should at least be 15-28 or 17-35.

Haha. They'll be more than happy to sell you the better zoom range.

One of the reasons the Sony platform is eating some of Nikon's sales is due to Tamron lens alternatives to costlier Sony lenses. Sony is gambling that once people adopt the Sony E and FE mount with Tamron lenses, they'll opt for Sony lenses later.

Even if they don't buy many Sony lenses later, they're still buying more Sony cameras.

Canon still sells the most cameras which I find to be amazing.

This whole Tamron range (17-28, 28-75, 70-180) was built for size and weight. So it's true that the zoom range isn't as long as the "standard" zooms for these classes, but if you compare the size and weight of a Tamron 2.8 zoom to any of the other brands' 2.8 zooms, there's a dramatic difference.

And, if you think about it, what are you really "losing" with this lens if you pair it with another? 1mm on the wide end. Because a wedding photographer might carry a 16-35mm and a 24-70mm on a pair of bodies, but then you have an overlap in your zoom range. 17-28 + 28-75 means no overlap, lighter lenses, and only a 1mm loss on the wide end. Ok, yea, the flip side is when you carry 28-75 + 70-180, you have an overlap and you lose 4mm on the wide end and 20mm on the long end vs 24-70 + 70-200, but you're still getting a huge weight savings. And, of course, there's the other scenario, where you might prefer 16-35 + 70-200 (which would probably be my preference since I don't really care for the "around 50mm" range), so in that case, maybe Tamron isn't the best choice, but it's all about having the choices available!
